Alfred Penlington (1920 - 18 April 1943) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Everton.

Early life and football career[edit]

Alfred Penlington was born in 1920 in Chester, and played for Rustproof Athletic in the Chester League. He was signed for Everton before 1940, and played 3 games in the wartime Football League.[2][3]

Military career and death[edit]

Penlington and teammate William Sumner joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR) shortly after their tenure with Everton, the former becoming a sergeant in No. 221 Squadron and being posted to Malta. The squadron specialized in torpedo attacks with Vickers Wellington bombers on Mediterranean convoys, and it was on one of these missions that Alfred Penlington would lose his life. On 18 April 1943, Penlington and 8 others boarded Wellington HX487 at RAF Luqa to conduct an anti-shipping operation west of Sicily. The aircraft failed to return, and it is thought that it was shot down by the Luftwaffe ace Heinz Rökker. Penlington and the other members of the crew have no known grave, and are commemorated on the Malta Memorial.[1][2]
