Alison Chiori Cole is a Nigerian author, fashion designer, and creative director best known as the co-founder and Creative Director of the global fashion label Villager. His multidisciplinary work bridges literature, design, and visual storytelling, exploring themes of identity, nostalgia, and collective resilience.[1][2]

Through both his writings and fashion collections, Cole celebrates the “ever-evolving and resilient human spirit,” rooted in ideas of family, legacy, and unity.[3]

Early life and education

Cole was born in Adamawa State, northern Nigeria, to a missionary father and a Christian family. His early years were spent moving across Nigeria—including Benin City and other rural regions—where his father established churches. These experiences of mobility and exposure to diverse communities later shaped his creative philosophy centred on humility, memory, and belonging.[1]

He studied English Literature with Psychology for his undergraduate degree and later earned a master’s degree in Novel to Film Adaptation from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom.[1]

Career

Writing

Before entering the fashion industry, Cole gained recognition as a writer and storyteller. His published works include North of My Mind, a collection of musings, short stories, and philosophical reflections, and Where Isn't Love?, a deeply personal exploration of how love evolves and is influenced by its environment.[4][2][3]

Fashion and Villager

Cole began his journey in fashion with a niche lifestyle brand called Yoga Gangster, which fused mindfulness with streetwear.[1] In 2023, Cole co-founded Villager, a global fashion movement built on the ethos of *Roots Run Deep*—a philosophy celebrating identity, humble beginnings, and the strength of community.[3] As Creative Director, Cole leads the brand’s design and creative direction, combining embroidery, digital artistry, and storytelling. Villager’s designs are produced with a focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing.

Film and creative projects

Alongside writing and fashion, Cole has produced and directed short documentaries exploring African spirituality, culture, and identity, including a project filmed in the Benin Republic that examined supernatural folklore and oral storytelling traditions. He plans to expand this series across other African countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia.[1]

Philosophy

Cole’s work is driven by the belief that fashion can act as a vessel for storytelling, identity, and healing. His creative process is rooted in nostalgia—revisiting moments from his childhood and transforming them into symbols of hope and resilience.[3] “Clothing,” he has said, “is my new notebook.”

Personal life

Cole is the youngest of seven siblings, with six older brothers. The family collectively runs businesses across shipping, entertainment, and agriculture in Nigeria.[1]
