AlmaLinux is a free and open source Linux distribution, a downstream, complete binary-compatible release using the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system source code. The project's aim is to provide a community-supported, production-grade enterprise operating system. AlmaLinux first stable release was published on March 30 2021.
History[edit]
On December 8, 2020, Red Hat announced that they would discontinue development of CentOS, which had been a production-ready downstream version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in favor of a newer upstream development variant of that operating system known as "CentOS Stream".[1] [2] [3]In response AlmaLinux was created by CloudLinux. The distribution aims to be 1:1 compatible with RHEL. A beta version of AlmaLinux has been released. The word Alma means soul in Spanish, therefore this name was chosen to highlight that the community is the soul behind Linux. AlmaLinux will be supported until 2029. On March, 2020, The AlmaLinux OS Foundation was created to take over AlmaLinux development and governance from the original developer, CloudLinux. [4]
