Altaro is a software company based in San Gwann, Malta, founded in 2009.[1] It specialises in backup and recovery software, primarily for small and medium-sized businesses. It operates globally, with over 40,000 customers worldwide[2] and offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Macedonia.[3]
History and Products[edit]
Foundation[edit]
Altaro was established in 2009 by David Vella, Julian Pace Ross, Simon Attard, and Stephen Chetcuti Bonavita.[4][5] The company was founded to tackle a "growing need for good backup and recovery software for the home PC user."[6]
Products[edit]
The company's initial products were 'Oops! Backup' and 'Backup FS'. 'Oops! Backup' was a backup utility that enabled consumers to backup their data and restore it from any of the previous saved points in time.[7] 'Backup FS' was a similar tool designed for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
In 2011, the company launched 'Altaro Hyper-V Backup',[8] now known as 'Altaro VM Backup'. The software is designed to backup virtual servers and virtual machines, specifically providing a backup solution for Hyper-V and VMware.[9][10] This signified a change in direction for the company, moving away from home users to cater exclusively for SMBs.[6]
Growth[edit]
By 2016, the company had expanded to 30,000 customers, of which 35% came from the United States. This included Harvard and Princeton universities, as well as the Swedish Defense Research Agency and the New Zealand Defence Force.[6]
In March 2017, CEO David Vella won EY's Rising Star Award,[11] which qualified Vella for the World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monaco.[2] Later that year, the company announced 40% year-on-year revenue growth.[12] In September, the company launched a campaign directly opposing major rival Veeam, claiming the recovery software they produced was becoming "too complex and too expensive."[13] In December 2017, Dutch computing magazine winmag awarded 'Altaro VM Backup' its Editor's Choice Award.[14] Throughout 2017, the company claims to have increased its number of partners to 7,000, and its number of customers to 40,000.[2]
In June 2018, the company won the 'Company of the Year' award at the Storage Awards, beating out rivals Veeam, American data management company Veritas, and network solutions company Barracuda Networks.[3] In December that year, they won two US Technology Elite Awards, hosted by US Business News. The company was named 'Best Cloud Backup Solutions Company', while the Altaro VM Backup' product won 'Best Virtual Environments Recovery Solution'.[15]
