Cody Franklin (born July 16, 1995), better known under the alias AlternateHistoryHub, is an American educational YouTuber, author, and graphic designer from Toledo, Ohio, whose channel primarily creates videos about alternate history scenarios. Franklin established his YouTube account on December 25, 2012. He also launched the podcast So That Happened, as well as the separate channel GeographyHub (later KnowledgeHub) on July 29, 2015. As of November 17, 2022, the channel AlternateHistoryHub has reached over 2.16 million subscribers.

In addition to his channel, Franklin also authored The Atlantropa Articles, an absurdist alternate history novel based on the real-life Atlantropa proposal.

Career[edit]

YouTube[edit]

Franklin created his YouTube channel on December 25, 2012, and released his first alternate history video, What if the Allies Lost World War II?, on March 16, 2013. Since launch, AlternateHistoryHub, as one of the first YouTube channels exploring alternate history scenarios,[2][3] the channel has had several viral videos, of particular notice History of the Fallout World (Lore), which explored the lore of the Fallout universe and, as of December 2020, it remains his most viewed video. Cody uses historical statistics, such as population censuses and geography, to determine many of these scenarios.[4][5] In February 2016, Franklin, along with many other channels such as Channel Awesome, began having issues with the YouTube management over copyright and fair use, nullifying their revenue.[6][7][8] This led to major delays in numerous videos, including in his four-part remastered What if Germany won World War II? series. Though YouTube later relented and announced that it would allow disputed videos to continue gaining revenue until the dispute was resolved,[9] AlternateHistoryHub has still endured many issues with YouTube. Cody's work in these videos has been met with acclaim from entertainment websites like Uproxx and MovieWeb.[10][11]

KnowledgeHub[edit]

On July 29, 2015, Franklin released a new channel separate from AlternateHistoryHub called GeographyHub, which primarily discussed geographical topics. He was mainly in a collaborative effort between himself, the artist narrator, and his brother Tyler, the writer and editor. The channel was promoted on AlternateHistoryHub on its launch, causing many of AlternateHistoryHub's subscriber base to subscribe to the channel. By 2016, the channel renamed itself KnowledgeHub, as to discuss subjects other than geography, and under Cody, began discussing more history-related content.[12]

The Atlantropa Articles[edit]

On August 18, 2018, Cody released a teaser on his channel for an upcoming project. The following week, he released an official animated teaser for his then-upcoming novel The Atlantropa Articles. On October 7, he released another video detailing the novel's plotline and setting. The book was released in stores and online the following week, on October 15, to a generally favorable reception and became a best-seller.[13]
