Amadea is a luxury yacht[1] that is 348 feet (106 metres long).[2] After launching in April 2016,[3] it was seized from owner Suleyman Kerimov by the US government in June 2022[2] as part of the FBI's Task Force KleptoCapture.[2] Its value is reported at $325 million.[4]

History[edit]

After commission, delivery took 31 months, considered fast at Lürssen, with speed added to the process by using the "technical innards" of the earlier Quantum Blue.[5] According to American Luxury, it was commissioned for around $325 million.[6] After launching in April 2016, the boat was listed for sale officially on September 2, 2019.[3] First interior photographs were released in 2019, when the vessel was put on the market. Amadea contains a pool, a beauty saloon, a helipad, bars and lounges, and other features like theatres over six levels. That year she was shown at the Monaco Yacht Show.[7] In February 2020, she became the largest yacht to ever be displayed in the Qatar International Boat Show.[8] Amadea was also the largest yacht at the 2020 Dubai International Boat Show.[9] As of October 2021, Amadea had been taken off the market.[3]

Impounding in Fiji[edit]

According to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Amadea turned off its automated information systems on February 24, 2022.[10]

In March 2022, the FBI launched Task Force KleptoCapture, targeting the vessel due to Suleyman Kerimov apparently secretly buying her in 2021 through shell companies.[2] Amadea left Manzanillo Port in Mexico on March 24, 2022, at which point it risked being seized by the USA, United Kingdom, or any European Union country due to sanctions on Kerimov's assets. She entered port in Fiji on April 12, 2022,[11] mooring at a port in the city of Lautoka at a private wharf behind gates guarded by local port authority.[10]

Upon arrival in Fiji in April, the vessel was impounded at the request of the United States, with FBI agents boarding the vessel. Their warrant noted ownership had transferred to Millemarin Investments in August 2021.[12] In port, Amadea became involved in a legal battle in the Fijian court system. With the United States seeking to seize the vessel, the owner of the yacht, Millemarin Investments, instead contended the vessel was owned by Eduard Khudainatov, former chairman of Rosneft Oil. the US argued Khudainatov was being used to conceal the vessel's true owner through shell companies, with Millemarin launching a series of legal challenges and appealing to Fiji's Supreme Court.[4] ABC published pictures in May 2022 showing the interior of the vessel to have been packed away and covered in protective plastic sheeting.[10] In July 2022, Fiji Chief Justice Kamal Kumar ruled that Amadea "sailed into Fiji waters without any permit and most probably to evade prosecution by the United States," and therefore could be seized under an international warrant.[13]

Seizure by the US[edit]

She was handed to US authorities on July 6, 2022.[12] The stay order was lifted June 7, 2022. She sailed out of Fiji's waters within hours, with a crew of 20 hired by US authorities[4] that entirely replaced the old crew. On June 16, 2022, the $325 million yacht was under an American flag en route to Hawaii.[4] She arrived in San Diego Bay on Monday, June 27, 2022.[2] The US Department of Justice wrote that Amadea would stay docked in the United States and remain in government custody "pending its anticipated forfeiture and sale."[2] As the US seized the vessel, it became responsible for around $30 million per year in maintenance costs.[10]

Design[edit]

The yacht is 348 feet (106 metres long).[2] The silhouette was created by designers Espen Oeino and Francois Zuretti, with Lürssen constructing the vessel.[8]

When she was launched in the spring of 2017, she was at 2,999-gross-tons and among the largest 40 yachts in the world. There are 8 staterooms with room to sleep 16 guests.[6]

It has a handmade piano with hardware of gold, while there is a 30-foot infinity pool on the deck.[13]
