Ambarawa Express is an Indonesian passenger train, operated by Kereta Api Indonesia. It runs between Semarang Poncol and Surabaya Pasar Turi.
The Ambarawa Express first operated on 4 October 2016 for replacing the Maharani and Blora Jaya Express services (when they were still KRD services).[1] This train has 2 departures, are Ambarawa I and II.
Origin
The name "Ambarawa" is taken from a sub-district with the same name in Semarang Regency is Ambarawa which is famous for its military barracks and Fort Willem I, as well as the Ambarawa Railway Museum which now functions as a museum.
Operational
Unlike the Maharani, the Ambarawa Express has a departure time from Semarang Poncol in the morning and a departure time from Surabaya Pasar Turi Station in the afternoon. The Ambarawa Express first operated using former Menoreh I train sets—a service discontinued due to low occupancy. To improve service quality, the train operates using economy-class plus train sets manufactured between 2016 and the present.
As of 6 July 2017, the Ambarawa Express experienced a schedule change so that the train series was used together with the Blora Jaya Express.[2]
On 1 April 2022, there are two types of trains used by the Ambarawa Express. For the Ambarawa Express I from Semarang Poncol to Surabaya Pasar Turi, it uses a train consisting of the new image economy class belonging to the Semarang Poncol train depot but departs on the morning and afternoon schedules for the reverse train. Meanwhile, for the Semarang Poncol to Surabaya Pasarturi train, the Ambarawa Express II uses a premium economy stainless steel train set, an idle Kertajaya train that wasn't used during this morning's service, which was previously used for the Maharani before ending its service on 30 September 2021 and being replaced by the Airlangga. The difference is, the fare for the Ambarawa Express 2 isn't subsidized by the government, while the fare for the Maharani train at that time was still subsidized by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation.
Routine train sets
Based on the enactment of new train travel chart 2025, the train layout for the Ambarawa Express 1 and 2 is as follows.
The Ambarawa Express 1 (265–266) use the "New Image" type train sets allocated by the Semarang Poncol Train Depot, consisting of seven economy class cars, one dining car, and one power train.
Meanwhile, the Ambarawa Express 2 (263–264) uses stainless steel train sets derived from the Kertajaya. They consist of 14 premium economy class cars, one dining car, and one power train.
