History

Pre-Cirebon Express

The Jakarta–Cirebon train service itself has actually existed since the 1950s. On 6 November 1952, a new schedule was implemented based on the 1952 Gapeka (Train Regulation) for Java, Madura Island, and South Sumatra. Under this schedule, the Jakarta–Cirebon train service was extended to three round trips per day. Then, on the enactment of new train travel chart 1952, the Jakarta–Cirebon train service was increased to four round trips per day.

This train consistently served the route. On 24 December 1971, the Jatinegara–Cirebon Express was launched, which would cut travel time from 4 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. This train was launched by the then Director General of Land Transportation, Soempono Bajoeadji, at Cirebon Station. This train was eventually replaced by the Gunungjati train, inaugurated on 1 February 1973, by the Minister of Transportation Frans Seda, the Mayor of Cirebon, Tatang Suwardi, and the Head of Bappenas Widjojo Nitisastro, to commemorate Cirebon's 602nd anniversary. This train had two round trips a day and took 2.5 hours. After the inauguration of this train, no other trains carried the name "Cirebon".

Cirebon Express (1984–2019)

On 10 May 1984, PJKA released the enactment of new train travel chart 1984. In the enactment of new train travel chart 1984, the Gunungjati train travel pattern was divided into 3 services, namely KRD MBW 302 Gunungjati with the Cirebon–Jakarta Kota round trip route (via Gambir), Tegal–Jakarta Kota round trip Express Train (later to become Tegal Arum train), and Cirebon–Jakarta Kota round trip Express (via Pasar Senen), which will likely become Cirebon Express in the future.[1]

During the provision of seats for the Lebaran train from 7 May 1987 to 31 May 1988, the reputation of the Cirebon Express continued to increase by making the train a Class II train, while Gunungjati actually experienced a "downgrade" to a Class III train and also ran on the Jakarta-Tegal return route (a few months later it was branded as Tegal Arum).[2] The popularity of Cirebon Express continued to increase until finally on 20 November 1989, Cirebon Express had eight trains, two of which were equipped with air conditioning (executive class trains).[3] With the completion of the switch-over of the Jakarta KotaManggarai elevated line on 1 June 1992, the Gunungjati train was removed. To fill the gap, the Cirebon Express train departed Cirebon at 12:20 local time.[4]

On 13 May 2005, PT KA added a new service as a derivative brand of the Cirebon Express train, namely the Cirebon Ekspres Utama (Main Cirebon Express)—a train with executive class service which only lasted two years because the train service was replaced by the Argo Jati since 12 April 2007.[5]

In 2007, PT KA extended several Cirebon Express routes to Brebes. Then, on 1 May 2007, PT KA named the extended train "Brebes Express."[6] Then on 25 July 2007, The service line on one of the Cirebon Express train journeys was extended to Tegal Station—this train service was later named Tegal Bahari—and the number of journeys was increased to twice a day starting in 2009.

Began on 18 October 2016, the Cirebon Express serves economy plus class—using train sets manufactured by PT INKA manufactured in 2016—by changing the business class service.

Argo Jati (executive class, 2007-2019)

Before the Argo Jati was launched on 12 April 2007,[7] there are three train services operating between Jakarta and Cirebon: the Gunung Jati (KRD) train (1973–1992), the Cirebon Express (1989–2019), and the Cirebon Ekspres Utama (Main Cirebon Express) (2005–2007). The launch of the "Argo" train on this route was planned due to customer demand and declining interest in the Cirebon Ekspres Utama train service. This train operates using used Argo Gede sets from 1995.

Relaunching

The relaunch of the Argo Jati train was carried out on 3 November 2010, under the name New Argo Jati as a replacement for the old service. Interest in executive class train services is increasing so that PT KAI is trying to improve the executive class service of the Argo on the GambirCirebon route.

This train operated using executive trains made by PT INKA, issued in 2010, while executive class trains produced in 1995 were used to operate the Cirebon Express and Argo Jati trains.

Apart from that, it operated using a stainless steel train set made by INKA, released in 2018, while the old Argo Jati train set made in 2010 was used to operate the Ranggajati train.

Tegal Bahari train (2007-2019)

The Tegal Bahari train is a spin-off of the Cirebon Express train service group after the extension of the service line to TegalStation since 2007. The launch of the Tegal Bahari train was also accompanied by the launch of a Tegal batik-themed dining car.[8] Previously, the Tegal Bahari train service offered executive and business class. In 2016, the service was redesigned to offer executive and economy class services with a new image.

Argo Cheribon (2019-31 January 2025)

The Argo Cheribon began operating on 16 August 2019—a merger of three train services: Argo Jati, Cirebon Express, and Tegal Bahari. However, later, starting 22 March 2022, the Tegal Bahari train resumed operations with the Pasar Senen-Tegal round-trip route.

Starting 3 November 2024, the Cheribon trains with train numbers 29-30 (and the Ranggajati trains starting 1 November 2024) will use the latest generation of economy class trains, modified by the Manggarai Yasa Center from the previous trains, reducing the number of seats from 80 to 72.

Operational of the Cirebon Facultative (2025-present)

On 1 February 2025, the Argo Cheribon's branding name will be removed from the enactment of new train travel chart 2025 and replaced with the Cirebon train with optional status.

The Cirebon train service will be split into two services with different routes: the Gunungjati train, SemarangCirebon–Jakarta, and the Cakrabuana train, Purwokerto–Cirebon–Jakarta.

Gunungjati and Cakrabuana train

The Gunungjati train is a spin-off of the Argo Cheribon Tegal train service after the service line was extended to Tegal Station from 2007 to 2025. Previously, the Gunungjati train operated for 19 years (1973–1992) and stopped operating in 1992. This train returned to operation after 32 years of suspended animation and the train route was extended to Semarang Tawang Station in 2025.

The Cakrabuana train is a spin-off of the Argo Cheribon train service, whose route was extended to Purwokerto Station.
