Ambrose Kenny-Smith is an Australian singer, songwriter, and harmonica player, known for being a member of bands King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and The Murlocs.

Early life[edit]

Kenny-Smith grew up in Preston, Victoria, before moving to Castlemaine at age eight, and eventually settling in Ocean Grove.[1] He is the son of singer Broderick Smith and model Louise Kenny. [1] Growing up, he states that "music was ingrained in [him]"[2], and that music was a way to "have a connection"[2] with his father. He began playing harmonica at the age of seven, and was very interested in blues music, stating he "went to sleep every night religiously listening to [...] Muddy Waters..."[2]. At age eight he made a seven song EP, Boy With The Blues. Throughout high school he continued to make music, but focused more on skateboarding.[2]

From the age of ten, Kenny-Smith was a sponsored skateboarder, with sponsorships from Volcom, Emerica footwear, Theeve trucks, Foundation skateboards, and Stereo skateboards.[3][4] Later in his teenage years, he began to focus more on music, ultimately culminating in him founding The Murlocs and joining King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

Music[edit]

Kenny-Smith played harmonica in bands throughout his teenage years, notably Sambrose Automobile with future King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard bassist Lucas Harwood. In the fall of 2010 he founded The Murlocs where he remains the lead singer, songwriter, and harmonica player. Soon after that, he joined King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard through mutual friends.[1] Since then, The Murlocs and King Gizzard have existed alongside each other.

Kenny-Smith plays Hohner Special 20 harmonicas.[5] In addition to using the standard western scale, he uses a variety of custom microtonal harmonicas both live and on recording.[2] These harmonicas were made by Neil Graham[2], a family friend, specifically for the creation of the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard records Flying Microtonal Banana, K.G., and L.W., all of which use microtonal scales. He calls himself an "overdub guy", referring to recording the harmonica on albums, stating that he's "had to treat it like vocals" in order to eliminate bleed from the other instruments in the room[2]. Regarding his role in King Gizzard, Kenny-Smith says that he's "always been the voice or harmonica tool in the band"[2]
