The 49th Annual American Music Awards will be broadcast by ABC on November 21, 2021, from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and will be streamed on Hulu the next day.[1][2][3][4] Cardi B will be the host.[5][6]
Nominees[edit]
The nominations were announced on ABC's Good Morning America, Spotify's morning show "The Get Up", and also via the American Music Awards Twitter account on October 28, 2021. Olivia Rodrigo received the most nominations with seven, followed by the Weeknd with six, and Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Giveon with five each. Three new categories were introduced in 2021: Favorite Trending Song, Favorite Latin Duo or Group, and Favorite Gospel Artist.[1][2][3][4]
Controversy[edit]
MRC Live & Alternative, organizers of the American Music Awards, announced that country singer Morgan Wallen will not be allowed to attend the ceremony, despite receiving two nominations for Favorite Male County Artist and Favorite Country Album. They released this statement: "Wallen is a nominee this year based on charting. As his conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting). We plan to evaluate his progress in doing meaningful work as an ally to the Black community and will consider his participation in future shows."[1]
