Ananth Prabhu Gurpur
Ananth Prabhu Gurpur, also known as Ananth Prabhu G and G. Ananth Prabhu,[1] is a cyber security expert,[2] author and a Professor in Computer Engineering at the Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management.[3] He is a guest faculty at the Karnataka Police Academy and also at Karnataka Judicial Academy.[4]
Early life and education
Ananth Prabhu grew up in Mangaluru, a district in Coastal Karnataka in a traditional middle-class Hindu family. His father is a retired banker and his mother is a Homemaker. He did his primary schooling at Rosario English Medium School, Mangaluru. He completed his High School and Pre University Course at St Aloysius College Mangalore.
Ananth Prabhu graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. He then went on to do an MBA in Information Technology and MTech in Computer Engineering from the Manipal University. He also holds a Diploma in Cyber Law from Government Law College, Mumbai and a PhD (Doctor in Philosophy) in Computer Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. He further completed his Postdoctoral Studies from the University of Houston, Texas.[3][5]
Work
Gurpur designed the "I am Cyber Safe" safety course aimed to raise awareness of people in rural areas about internet safety, that was formally launched by the Home Secretary IGP D. Roopa in 2020.[6][7][4]
He also developed an SOS blood via SMS service with Paritosh Vyas to help people looking for blood.[8][9]
Dr Ananth developed an indigenous no touch IOT sanitiser dispenser. The dispenser connected with wifi would give real time data on usage and had an IR temperature sensor.[10]
Ananth was one of the two recipients of a grant of INR 80 Lakhs that was given through state government to set up a Centre of Excellence in Digital Forensics Intelligence and Cyber Security and was appointed as the principal investigator.[11]
Commentary
In 2020, Prabhu discussed hacking as the "new normal" in response to a bitcoin scam related to compromised Twitter accounts.[12] Prabhu also highlighted and brought notice to fake oximeter apps for COVID 19,[13] as well as matrimonial scams and sextortion schemes on online dating websites.[14]
India today reported his comments on cyber security as part of school curriculum and India's cyber laws, "Prabhu wants cyber security introduced in school curriculums so that students are made more aware of the dangers lurking online. He cautions government agencies on the need to upgrade their cyber security and would also like to see India's cyber laws updated periodically to meet the growing challenges."[4]
He has also spoken about posting close up pictures at social media and messenger apps like whatsapp, "Posting high resolution photographs can be morphed easily. Using www.tineye.com, one can go for reverse image search by uploading the photo that a person thinks that is being misused. The search will reveal whether the said photo is used somewhere else by some individuals. It will also reveal the origin of the photograph from where it was downloaded."[2]
Dr Ananth has made comments and on other issues including Saree Challenge photographs ending up as DeepNudes[15] and E-waste management.[16] Prabhu also highlighted the EMI deferment fraud in the country and how people who are not very good with English are being scammed.[17]
Public/Social Service
Gurpur has been part of other philanthropic initiatives like Ring The Bell in Karnataka (inspired from Kerala).[18] He has served as an advisor to the Vikas Group of Institutions.[19] Gurpur also supported in providing maternity nutrition kit to pregnant women in Dakshin Kannada.[20]

One of his papers was part of the Most Cited Pattern Recognition Letters Articles List since 2018.[1]
Non-Academic Publications
Ananth writes on a variety of topics, including self-development and cybersecurity. In 2017, he released a Cyber Crimes and Prevention eBook Cyber Safe Girl.[26][27]The Hindu reported 1.5 Lakhs download of the book.[7] His other works includes Little Black Book For Teachers, which he wrote in response to a question asked to him on how to become a good teacher, and was distributed free to teachers following a sponsorship from Krishna J. Palemar, chairman of Vikas Education Trust in 2016.[28] In 2017, I Own the Monk's Ferrari, a self-help book about having the correct work-life balance and including a spiritual search/aspect was released by Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.[29] In 2021, he released Glorious Bharat, about the history of India.[30]
