Angelique Sina is a Puerto Rican businessperson. She is founder of the Friends of Puerto Rico non-profit organization and a commissioner in the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs (MOLA) in Washington, D.C.

Early life and education[edit]

Angelique Velez was born to Maria T. Roman and Oscar Velez of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.[1] She completed a bachelor's degree at University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla.[2] In 2014, Sina earned a master of arts in corporate and nonprofit communication from Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University.[3] She is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University's Latino Entrepreneurship Scaling program.[4]

Career[edit]

In 2014, Sina worked as an associate for global markets at the International Finance Corporation. In this role, Sina worked to finance affordable housing projects in developing countries.[1] Sina worked for the World Bank as a global relationship manager.[3] She has served on the following boards: Latinas in Business,[5] Art Museum of the Americas, Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce[6] and Johns Hopkins Council.[7] Angelique is a writer for the Forbes Nonprofit Council[8] and HuffPost.[9] She is active in social impact efforts for Puerto Rico and Africa, and her work in these areas have been covered by interviews in magazines and newspapers[10][11]

In 2016, she was appointed by the Mayor of Washington, D.C. to serve as a Commissioner[12] in the Mayor's Office of Latino Affairs (MOLA) of the District of Columbia.[13]

Friends of Puerto Rico[edit]

Sina founded Friends of Puerto Rico in 2015.[2][14] It is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and non-partisan organization based in Washington, D.C. Their mission is described as a focus on social impact, creating opportunities to develop the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in Puerto Rico. They have received donations from BB&T, Verizon, and individual donors.[15]

In 2017, Friends of Puerto Rico responded to Hurricane Maria by coordinating national donations to Puerto Rico, providing 300,000 lbs of clothes, food, and supplies[16] flown out of Miami, Florida.[17] The organization also establish a Hurricane Maria Recovery Fund towards rebuilding efforts.[18] The organization has continued to collect donations and help families leave the island in the months after the hurricane.[19]

In 2019, a social impact coffee Café Ama was launched by the organization at an expo in San Juan, Puerto Rico.[20] Sina is president of Cama Ama.[3]

Personal life[edit]

In January 2014, Velez married Jeremy Sina in Añasco, Puerto Rico.[1]

Awards and honors[edit]

Sina has been a scholar of the Aspen Institute and a nominee for the Forbes 30 under 30 award and was selected as a “Changemaker” at the White House United State of Women and recognized as an Emerging Leader[21] by the Hispanic Alliance.[22] She has received the Young Leadership Award at The Washington Center,[23] the Redefining Leadership Award from the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement,[24] and the 2017 Brava Award for her work.[25]
