The Animal House Shelter is a nonprofit organization that operates a no-kill shelter located in Huntley, Illinois. In 2012, the shelter estimates they have found homes for over 20,000 animals. The shelter accommodates all breeds of dogs and cats. The shelter holds many events each year in order to spread awareness and collect donations to keep the shelter functioning.[1]
History[edit]
Founded by Leslie Irwin in June 2002, the shelter originally opened in her home in Barrington, Illinois. Leslie received a call from a friend that a dog was loose on a street near her home. She rescued the dog and took the dog into her home, which became the first location of the shelter. The organization moved to its current home in June of 2005.[1] Impressed by the shelter reaching over 23,000 adoptions by 2012, the organizers of the Second Annual Polo for Pets Charity Tailgate Match was held in August of 2012 and sponsored the shelter for the event.[2] In January of 2014 the boiler that heats the floors of the shelter where the animals are housed stopped functioning. The community responded by donating blankets and heaters to the shelter.[3] A local plumbing company donated a new boiler and the labor to install it the next day.[4]
Services[edit]
Animal House Shelter offers pet adoption services, veterinary care, foster programs, volunteer opportunities, and pet sponsorships.[5]
Veterinary Care[edit]
The shelter rescues and rehabilitates all dogs and cats before they are adopted out. Full services include spaying and neutering, vaccines and boosters, heartworm treatment, microchipping and deworming.[6]
Events[edit]
Donations[edit]
Black Diamond Plumbing[edit]
In January of 2014, Black Diamond Heating and Mechanical donated a new boiler to Animal House Shelter after their boiler at the time had failed. The boiler provided floor heating for dog kennels. The boiler and labor were donated due to a lack of funds. [10]
Chicago Automobile Trade Association[edit]
On November 1, 2013, the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) and Tom Peck Ford donated $1,500 to Animal House Shelter. The donation was part of CATA's Chicagoland Dealers Care program, which works to provide additional financial support to local charities. The donation was used to provide food and medical care to the animals. In the past, Tom Peck Ford has provided Animal House Shelter with financial support, including the donation of a vehicle to transport rescue animals. [11]
FYDOLAND[edit]
For Your Dog Only Land (FYDOLand) is a doggy day care center located in Huntley, Illinois. The facility conducts a Presents for Pups fundraiser in which they collect and donate food, toys, cleaning supplies, and towels to local animal shelters, including Animal House Shelter. The doggy day care center also donates 20% of its profits from their dog biscuits sales to local animal shelters. [12]
Controversy[edit]
On December 4, 2016, Animal House Shelter hosted a "Pictures with Santa" Christmas fundraiser. The purpose of the fundraiser was to encourage individuals to bring their pets and families to take photos with Santa. Due to poor weather conditions, the Santa who was originally hired was not able to attend. Shelter workers resorted to shelter employee Taylar Blaul as a last-minute replacement. Blaul dressed as Santa and proceeded to interact with children under the age of 18. In Illinois, sex offenders are barred from participating in holiday related events involving children who are under the age of 18. At the time, higher management at Animal House Shelter was aware of Blaul's convictions. Shelter representatives did not confirm if they were aware of Blaul's status as a registered sex offender nor the amount of time he worked for the shelter. Blaul was sentenced to serve 60 days in county jail, as well as two years of probation and attend counseling.[13]
