Anjali Ranadivé, known by her stage name Nani (previously Anjali World), is an American singer-songwriter and marine conservationist.[1][2][3]

Early life[edit]

Anjali grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a marine science degree[4] in 2013.[5] Her father, Vivek Ranadivé, is the founder and CEO of TIBCO as well as the majority owner of the Sacramento Kings.[6][4] Her mother is Ranadive's ex-wife, philanthropist Debra Addicott. Anjali represented the Sacramento Kings at the 2014 NBA Draft Lottery.[7][8]

She became interested in singing through her mother and brother's love for music. In particular, her brother produced tracks for local rappers.[3] She decided to fully pursue music as a career after graduating from university.[3]

Career[edit]

Ocean conservation[edit]

Growing up, Ranadivé developed a passion for animals while working at aquariums, animal rescues, and conservation centers like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Yggdrasil Wildlife Center, and The Ocean Project.[9][10] After graduating with a science degree, she founded Jaws & Paws,[4] a marine and wildlife conservation nonprofit that spreads awareness for the conservation of sharks, polar bears, and tigers.[1][11] She has been working in different countries, even in India (three years of practice), where her family comes from. She remains proud of her Indian heritage, and her stage name "Nani" is a derivative of the Hindi term for "grandmother," as she has always valued the presence of elderly figures in her life. Ranadive gives all the proceeds from her music to Jaws & Paws.[12][13] In October 2015, Anjali received the 2015 Paul Walker Ocean Leadership Award from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.[14]

Music[edit]

Anjali is an R&B singer-songwriter.[15][16]

She wrote and released her first single, "We Turn Up" in April 2014.[3][17] The track was written with R&B, pop, and Bollywood influences, and was produced by Super Dave with Moroccan rapper, French Montana, featured on the song.[2][15][18][19] The music video for "We Turn Up" premiered on Music Choice in September 2014.[18] Her second single is called "Nobody" and features Tyga.[4][20] She performed the song at the Sacramento Kings halftime show on December 8, 2014.[21] Anjali has opened for artists like Trey Songz, Raghav, and the New Boyz.[22] She sang the national anthem when Indian prime minister Narendra Modi had a rally in Madison Square Garden.[23][24]
