Style, Technique, and Themes
Anna Soghomonyan's art results from an exploration of deep psychological and cultural layers. Her works serve as poetic dialogues between the inner and outer worlds of the human experience, as well as between personal memory and collective heritage. Her oeuvre develops along two main thematic axes: the psychological examination of identity and the reinterpretation of cultural heritage.
Her style is characterized by combinations of emotionally charged color fields. Her rich palette reflects the vibrant and diverse colors of Armenia. She often works in thematic series, exploring a specific idea or emotional state in each. Her works feature elements of modern expressionism, surrealism, and primitivism, intertwined with the traditions of Armenian fauvism, creating a unique and recognizable artistic language.
Soghomonyan works in series, dedicating approximately two to three years to each. She uses oil or acrylic paints, depending on the artistic objective. Her creative process, as she describes it, is deeply connected to the subconscious; she initially creates chaotic marks and textures in various colors, subsequently discerning the future painting within them, thus bypassing conscious intent. This method, reminiscent of surrealist automatism and abstract expressionism techniques, becomes a deliberate practice for Soghomonyan, allowing characters and narratives to emerge not from conscious decision-making, but from inner, intuitive impulses. Consequently, her art becomes a sensory experience rather than a mere commentary.
Major Series
Alter Ego
One of the central themes in Soghomonyan's oeuvre is the exploration of the human inner world, which finds its most vivid expression in the "Alter Ego" series. This series serves as a "deep revelation of identity," where the canvas becomes a "psychological landscape." The artist explores the multilayered nature of identity, giving body to voices that often remain hidden within.
The influence of psychoanalyst Carl Jung's ideas, particularly the concepts of the "shadow," "anima," and "animus," is evident in this series. Soghomonyan's characters are not classic portraits, but rather "mirrors." They speak not only of the author but of every viewer, reflecting universal emotions, inner struggles, fears, and dreams. Through "Alter Ego," the artist masterfully transforms personal experience into collective contemplation, making the personal universal.
The "Alter Ego" series was exhibited in 2025 at the State Art Museum of Adjara (Batumi, Georgia) and at the Art Embassy gallery (Yerevan, Armenia).
We Are Our Mountains
While "Alter Ego" is directed towards the human inner world, the "We Are Our Mountains" series is deeply rooted in Armenian collective identity and cultural heritage. This series represents a unique interpretation of the aesthetic principles of the Armenian school of painting.
In this series, Soghomonyan uses bright colors, simplified forms, and bold compositional solutions, creating narratives that awaken a deep sense of belonging in the Armenian viewer. The richness of her palette and the profound connection to the colors of the homeland are nourished by vivid childhood memories spent in the nature of Dilijan.
The historical context of this series' creation is pivotal. The artist began working on it during the days of the mass displacement of Armenians from Artsakh, as a counterweight to the prevailing tragic reality. It is an artistic attempt to "turn pain into vision" and "change the unbearable reality." Through her brush, she strives to create an image of a "more peaceful and happy Armenian world." These works not only preserve memory but also become a source of resilience and hope, testifying to art's healing and future-building capacity.
The "We Are Our Mountains" series has been exhibited in Yerevan, Istanbul, and Dubai.
Modern Still Life
In the "Modern Still Life" series, Soghomonyan reinterprets the canonical genre of still life, viewing it through the prism of modern aesthetics.
With this series, the author begins her experiments in combining the classic and the contemporary, which later continue in her "We Are Our Mountains" series. Through these experiments, the artist seeks to impart a new, fresh sound to one of the most archaic genres of fine art.
The "Modern Still Life" series has been exhibited in Yerevan at the "Art Embassy" gallery and at Zvartnots International Airport.
Anna's Tales
"Anna's Fairy Tales" is an imaginative and whimsical world. Art critic Narine Eyramjyants defines the aesthetics of this series as a "Yerevan fairy-tale style," where reality is transformed into magical narratives, and the bright, resonant palette excludes aggression, conveying only light and kindness.
Curator Seda Sevada observes that although the works bear a fairy-tale nature, they contain traces of real Armenian cultural layers. Sevada characterizes this series as a "gentle force that transforms the world."
"Anna's Tales" was presented in 2021 in Los Angeles and Yerevan. For this exhibition, Anna Soghomonyan was awarded Certificates of Recognition by the California State Assembly and the California State Senate for her contribution to art and for sharing rich Armenian heritage with Californians.
Transparent and Red Spot
Usually known for a bright and rich palette, in these two series, Soghomonyan makes a sharp aesthetic turn toward monochrome painting. The "Transparent" series is executed exclusively in black and white, while "Red Spot" features dramatic accents of red on a black-and-white base.
These works serve as an experimental field for the author to test the impact of her art under strict color limitations. The goal was to reveal "how deep an artistic language can be" when it is traditionally perceived as graphic. The absence of color here is compensated by the emotional tension of line, form, and contrast.
The exhibition of these two series marked the official opening of the "Art Embassy" gallery.
Antikilki
The "Antikilki" series stands out in Soghomonyan's art for its sharp humor and emphasized feminist subtext. In this small but popular series, the artist allegorically interprets a problem observed in Armenian reality: the transformation of a woman into "canned food" after marriage.
Using the metaphor of canning, the author speaks through the language of satire about the "preservation" of a woman's individuality in family life, as well as the dangers of social molds and domestic stagnation.
The "Antikilki" series has not had a separate exhibition.
