Dr. Anthony George Laing is a Ghanaian plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is recognized as Ghana's first plastic surgeon.[1][2]
He is associated with the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. This is where he made his contributions to the development of burn care and reconstructive surgery services in the country. [3][4]
Education
Laing studied medicine in the United Kingdom and later specialized in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He trained at the University of Sheffield in England before returning to Ghana in the early 1990s to help establish modern plastic surgery services in the country.[1][2]
Career
Laing returned to Ghana in 1993 and became a leading surgeon at the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.[1]
His work focused on:
- Burn management
- Skin grafting
- Facial reconstruction
- Trauma surgery
- Limb reconstruction
- Breast reconstruction and reduction surgery
Laing became known for performing reconstructive surgeries for accident and burn victims in Ghana.[1][5]
He also contributed to medical education and served as a part-time lecturer associated with medical training programs linked to the University of Ghana and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.[6]
