Apify is a Czech technology startup based in Prague. It deals with data extraction from websites, automation of internet processes, and data processing using artificial intelligence.
Apify operates the eponymous serverless cloud computing platform running on top of the containerization system Docker.[1] The platform allows developers to share their software with end users in modular units called Actors.[2] In 2021, the Apify Paid Actors program was launched, allowing developers to charge for access to their selected Actors individually.
Since 2016, Apify has been developing Crawlee (called Apify SDK until 2022), an open Node.js library for extracting data from the web and automating processes in web browsers.[3]
Since 2022, the company is also focusing on developing data software for large language models.[4]
History[edit]
In 2015, the company's founders participated in the first year of the Y Combinator Fellowship with their prototype project Apifier.[5]
The company itself was founded February 15, 2016 under the name Apifier s.r.o.[6] The company has used the current shortened name Apify since October 2017.
In 2022, the company consisted of approximately 80 employees.[7]
In 2023, Apify received the CE Tech Rocketship award, a special recognition by Deloitte and Google Cloud.[8] In the same year, Apify ranked as the 187th fastest-growing European company according to the Financial Times.[9]
Services[edit]
The company focuses on web process automation and web data extraction and analysis services. In 2019, the company estimated that it processed approximately 1 billion web pages per month.[10]
Apify's cloud platform registered approximately 230,000 user accounts in June 2022. The Apify platform hosts more than 1,500 Actors that extract data from various sources.[11]
Non-profit projects[edit]
Apify regularly provides its services to non-profit organizations.[12]
In the Czech Republic, Apify cooperates with the non-profit projects Hlídač Shopů, Hlídač Státu and the initiative COVID19CZ.[13] In 2020, the company launched its own project Realitní pes, which focuses on the real estate market in the Czech Republic.[14]
The company also provides data on human trafficking to the international nonprofit organization Thorn.[15]
