AppGyver Oy is a Finnish IT company founded in 2010. With the Composer Pro platform built by AppGyver, app developers can create web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Android TV applications visually, without traditional text-based programming.[3]

History[edit]

AppGyver was founded by Marko Lehtimäki, CEO, and Henri Vähäkainu, COO in 2010.[4] Henri Vähäkainu is known as the rap artist Pikku G. After a ten-year break he returned to the stage in 2017 to continue his musical career alongside his business.[5] [6] [7]

Products[edit]

AppGyver's mission is to make modern application development faster, more efficient, and more accessible. This is done primarily by creating and providing tools that can be used to build applications visually instead of traditional, text-based programming and heavy coding.[8] [9]

In 2013 AppGyver launched its first product, Prototyper, which was a web-based tool for building interactive prototypes for iOS and Android platforms around UI images uploaded to the service.[10] In 2014 it was followed by Composer, which enabled the construction of HTML5-based mobile applications visually for iOS and Android platforms.[11] The main difference between the previous Prototyper-product was that Composer was able to build real applications, as well as to provide them with dynamic data from databases and third-party web services. Composer 2, released in 2015, expanded the features of Composer, with a particular focus on B2B applications, and brought the web as a supported platform alongside iOS and Android.[12][13]

In 2021, AppGyver was focused on one product: the visual development platform Composer Pro, released in April 2020. This is the third version of the Composer product, which is completely free for indie developers as well as companies with a turnover of less than USD 10 million.[14]

Applications built with Composer Pro use React and React Native technology.[15] The Prototyper and Composer products were based on the Steroids.js programming library built by AppGyver (released in August 2013), which improved the performance and smoothness of PhoneGap applications by incorporating native UI components and animations into HTML5 content. [16] Steroids.js was followed by the new generation programming library Supersonic (released in December 2014) built by AppGyver, which expanded the Steroids library with rich user interface components and better tools and was used by applications built with Composer 2.[17]

Customers[edit]

AppGyver's largest customer base in terms of numbers are members of the development community who use the product for free. AppGyver has not published precise information about its corporate customers, but these include e.g. Fingrid and DHL.

Organization[edit]

In 2014, AppGyver raised EUR 1.8 million in funding from private equity investors to create a visual mobile application development platform. At that time, the company had also received funding from Tekes (now Business Finland). In 2017, AppGyver raised EUR 4.5 million in funding to accelerate sales and product development. In April 2020, the company announced new funding of EUR 2 million to continue its product development.[18] [19] [20]

In 2019, the company employed 14 people and it had a turnover of EUR 0.8 million. The company is domiciled in Helsinki, where its head office is also located.[21]

Owners[edit]

In February 2021, the company was acquired by the software giant SAP.[22][23][24] Change in the ownership has enabled the company's growth.[9]

Prior to the acquisition, AppGyver was owned by its founders and employees, venture capital companies Karma Ventures, Open Ocean Capital, Initial Capital and investor-entrepreneur Kristian Segerstrale.[18][19]

Acknowledgments[edit]

  • In 2014, AppGyver was nominated for the Red Herring Award among the 100 most promising technology start-ups.[25]
  • In 2019, the company rose to the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Finland list as a fast-growing technology start-up.[26]
