Archduchess Maria Beatrix of Austria-Este (German: Maria Beatrix Anna Franziska, Erzherzogin von Österreich-Este, Prinzessin von Modena; 13 February 1824 – 18 March 1906) was the consort of the Carlist pretender, Juan, Count of Montizón and, by birth, a member of the House of Austria-Este which had ruled the Duchy of Modena.

She was born in Modena, the youngest daughter of Francis IV of Modena and his niece consort, Maria Beatrice of Savoy.

Marriage and issue[edit]

On 6 February 1847 in Modena Maria Beatrix married Infante Juan de Borbón who, as the Carlist claimant to the throne of Spain from 1860 to 1868 became known as Don Juan, the Conde de Montizón. As he was also the Legitimist claimant to the throne of France from 1883 to 1887, Maria Beatrix was also the titular queen consort of that country to French monarchists who rejected the claims of the Orléanist and Bonapartist pretenders.

Maria Beatrix and Juan had two children:

  • Carlos, Duke of Madrid (30 March 1848 – 18 July 1909)
  • Alfonso Carlos, Duke of San Jaime (12 September 1849 – 29 September 1936)

Maria Beatrix died in Graz, Styria, then a city in Austria–Hungary, aged 82.
