Monika Maria Roberta Antonia Raphaela de Habsburgo-Lorena, Duchess of Santángelo (born 13 September 1954, in Würzburg) is a Spanish noblewoman of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.[1]

Early life[edit]

Monika Maria Roberta Antonia Raphaela[1] was born in Würzburg, Bavaria, the second child of the German politician Otto von Habsburg, head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, and Regina (née Prinzessin von Sachsen-Meiningen). She is the older twin sister of Michaela von Habsburg.[1] She was raised at her parents' home in exile, Villa Austria, in Pöcking, Bavaria. She is a granddaughter of the last Austrian emperor, Charles I.

Marriage[edit]

Monika von Habsburg married a Spanish nobleman and grandee, Don Luis María Gonzaga de Casanova-Cárdenas y Barón, 5th Duke of Santángelo on 21 June 1980 in Pöcking, Germany.[2] The Duke of Santangelo (until 2015 also the Duke of Maqueda, after which this title was successfully claimed by his oldest sister)[3]) was born on 24 April 1950 in Madrid as the only son of Balthasar de Casanova-Cárdenas y de Ferrer and María de los Dolores Barón y Osorio de Moscoso, Duchess de Maqueda. The Duke of Santangelo is a farmer and business executive,[2] he and Monika raised their children in the old Moorish castle of La Rápita in Vallfogona de Balaguer, in the Catalan province of Lleida, Spain.[2] Fifth cousins-once-removed through descent from daughters of Francis I of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, the couple have been active in the civic and charitable activities of the regional Spanish chivalric orders of the Real Cuerpo de la Nobleza de Cataluña and the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Valencia.[2] They have four sons:[2]

  • Baltasar Carlos de Casanova y Habsburgo-Lorena (born 17 August 1981 in Rapita, Vallfogona de Balaguer; between 2003 and 2018 the 22nd Marquess of Elche)
  • Gabriel Maria de Casanova y Habsburgo-Lorena (born 23 March 1983 in Barcelona)
  • Rafael Maria de Casanova y Habsburgo-Lorena (born 18 August 1986 in Rapita, Vallfogona de Balaguer)
  • Santiago de Casanova y Habsburgo-Lorena (born 26 April 1993 in Barcelona)
