Army Men III is a canceled fangame developed by Néotl Empire, directed by ContraWolf of youtube and designed by OnyeNacho. It’s a direct sequel to 1998’s Army Men and 1999's Army Men II, concluding the never finished story from those games.

Development[edit]

Army Men III started development back in the summer of 2004 as a short singleplayer mod for a game called Freedom Force under the working title Army Men X. The story was about a nameless green soldier and his team sent on a mission to infiltrate and destroy a Tan fort in the attic of a house in the real world. Their plane is shot down as they approach the house and crashes into a sandbox in the backyard. The player wakes up and realizes he’s the only survivor of the crash. All alone and with no radio support, the player is forced to single-handedly fight his way through the house and destroy the fort.

Nacho worked on it until the spring of 2006 when his hard drive became corrupted. After a couple of months trying to recover his data, Nacho abandoned the Freedom Force mod and tried again to create his game with Halo Custom Edition starting in the summer of 2006, now under a new title, Army Men Extended.

However, a malware attack in the fall of 2007 caused Nacho to have to reformat his hard drive, leaving almost all of the work he had done with the Halo Custom Edition lost. Nacho tried again to rebuild until December 2007 when a boot sector virus corrupted his entire computer, forcing him to get a new one.

Nacho abandoned the mod until summer 2008 when he tried to create it again, this time as a mod for Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

However, in spring 2009, Nacho lost all his data for the 4th time after his hard drive failed. After that, he decided to switch over to the Source SDK base 2007, feeling it was a better base to create his mod with as players could download any Source engine game and be able to play the mod instead of specifically having to buy Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

In August 2009, Nacho changed his mind about the direction of the mod and decided to switch to Unreal Tournament 3 after he realized he was better at modding there than the source engine but when Epic Games released the Unreal Development Kit to the public in October 2009, Nacho moved the game over there as he now wanted to turn Army Men Extended into a full-fledged game.

In January 2010, a youtuber going by the name ContraWolf discovered the game after one of his subscribers messaged him about it. After a few days of talking, Nacho brought him onto the team initially as a voice actor but made him the creative director and story writer shortly after when Contra impressed Nacho with a slew of ideas he had for the game.

Contra wrote a new story and script and convinced Nacho to change the name to Army Men III as Contra had always wanted to see the original army men story concluded. Under Contra’s direction and with an entire team being brought on over the next few months, the game made some decent progress.

But as the year dragged on, internal conflicts within the team grounded development almost to a complete stop and by the end of the year, nearly the entire team had quit with only Nacho and Contra remaining. Despite this, work still continued and around 2013, the two felt they had enough of a game to launch a public beta of the campaign and were aiming for a release date of April 30th 2013 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the army men franchise

In April 2013 shortly before the beta launch, Small Dev Talk interviewed Nacho on the development of the game. Nacho discussed the beta's features such as the skirmish mode and the story of the game. [1]

He talked about future plans for online multiplayer and co-op where players can use a plastic currency system to buy supplies, special abilities and user mods which would work in the same way as Unreal Tournament and other games using Unreal Engine 3 and explained how he planned on bypassing Unreal Development Kit's limitations by using build scripts and a special mod folder to store all custom content.

He also mentioned that the competitive multiplayer would be standalone due to the file size and a much broader scope in online play. "Considering how our Beta release is nearly 3GB (Uncooked dev files are over 16GB), we feared there would not be enough space to add the competitive multiplayer mode - more especially since it will include a LOT more competitive gameplay than the Army Men 3 campaign which is mostly cooperative."

The beta did arrive on April 30th 2013 but the game was riddled with bugs and glitches, becoming nearly unplayable around level 5. A patch to fix all of this was promised but it took over two years to arrive and failed to fix many of the issues. Nacho also announced on the day of the patch’s release that the game would be ported to Unreal Engine 4 and expressed hope that development would be much easier.

In November 2015, ContraWolf told Nacho he was taking an indefinite break from the project due to being fed up after years of little to no progress being made but also said he would return if development ever picked up again. Nacho then announced in April 2016 that Army Men III would be postponed indefinitely, with his focus shifting to Army Men Online and a new original game.

Nacho reassured his fans that Army Men III was not canceled and that development would resume sometime in the future but it never would be as Contra quit the team in November 2016, saying that after the last year of total inactivity on Army Men III, he saw no reason to stay on as he no longer had any hope for the game and no interest in anything else Nacho was working on. With his entire team now gone and having failed to secure the licensing rights for Army men despite trying for years, Nacho announced in December 2016 that he had canceled the game.

On April 30th 2018, Nacho released the Army Men III files to the public and announced that the game had gone open-source and was free for anyone to pick up where he left off. He also said he was still working on Army Men Online but there’s been no further news or updates on it. Nacho has instead been focusing on his new original game, under the working title Qore World and the other things he plans to make to expand the universe around it .
