Arsenal Street (Chinese: 軍器廠街) is a north–south running street in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It marks the division between Admiralty and Wan Chai. It is named after the Old Arsenal at Wan Chai. It is now home to the Hong Kong Police Headquarters to its west side.[2]
History[edit]
Arsenal Street was built during the Colonial era. Originally, there was a fort built to its west side which belonged to the Wellington Barracks.[1][3] After its demolition in the 1980s, the street retained its old name and is now home to the Hong Kong Police Headquarters.[4]
During the 1930s before Queensway was straightened out to meet Hennessy Road at its current place at the intersection with Arsenal Street today, the tram ran through this road from Queensway in the west and connected to Johnston Road on the east side in Wan Chai.[5][6]
This street was originally home to the Hong Kong Police Museum starting in 1976 and later moved to its current location at Wan Chai Gap.[7]
In 2014, this road was blocked and an attempted storming took place amid the 2014 protests, and many of the protesters filed complaints against the police due to a crackdown a few days earlier.[8]
