The Asandhiwat Kingdom was an Indian power based in Assandh, Haryana, India.

History[edit]

The Asandhiwat Kingdom was a power based around Assandh, Haryana, India. Asandhimitra, the queen consort of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka was born here in 302 BC. The 2000 year old stupa of Assandh is one of the tallest Buddhist stupas in North India, 80 ft high and 250 ft in diameter. It was probably built by the rulers of Asandhiwat.[1][2]

The Asandhiwat kingdom was based in Asandh and maybe controlled some of the territories of the former Kuru Empire. This is because Asandh, probably the capital of the Asandhiwats, was mentioned as the capital of the Kuru king Janamejaya[3] It is also mentioned by Pāṇini in his Astadhyayi.[4]

The Udyoga Parva (Mahabharata, Book V, Chapter 31) mentions that Pandavas wanted peace and demanded only five villages: Kushasthala, Vrikasthala, Asandi (Asandh), Varanavata, and for the fifth any other village to end the quarrel.[5]
