Ashovania's Demon

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ashovania's Demon is the first book in the Nicodemus trilogy written by Derrick R. Lafayette.

The fantasy novel revolves around characters who all live within the region of Ashovania during a civil war between Avalon and Alastair. The main drive of the war is a mysterious rune, known as the "Arcane Rune", which is in the possession of the Avalonian kingdom. The Arcane Rune allows the soil and nature within their planet to flourish rapidly, creating a utopia-like landscape wherever it's placed. With Alastair suffering without the effects of the rune, they resorted to technology and advanced in weaponry, and architecture, making them a threat for the non-progressive Avalonian kingdom. Things go haywire during the 100-year war when the current King of Avalon, Gamon, get's fatally wounded and his unfit son (The Prince) must take over the kingdom. The revelation of the demon, and the rune are mysteriously uncovered when the book travels into the past to show you the connection between everyone, including the genesis of Avalon.

The novel is written in third person omniscient and at times, jumps from the past to the present. It was self-published on October 27, 2016 by Createspace.[1]

Main Characters[edit]

  • The Prince: A cowardly, 30 year old pompous leader who has no idea how war works. Despite trying to fill his father's shoes by pretending to be smarter than he is, eventually the entire Avalon kingdom realizes that he's no good at leader. In fact, he's not good at anything. To make matters worse, since his father's injury he's been tormented by hallucinations of a 'demon', that appears to him at any moment, sometimes at night, sometimes during war.
  • Drago: A sadistic, mentally disturbed soldier in the Alastair kingdom. He splits his time between torturing Avalonian captives, and killing people on the battlefield. Since the discovery that he is immortal, his stature within the Alastair hierarchy is noticed, and during the Battle of Osk Shallows, he finally gets a chance to battle with Gamon, the King of Avalon.
  • Viola: A lowly, peasant janitor, who struggles with everyday life within Alastair. She cares not about the war or anything else. At times during the night, she is haunted by childlike apparitions who try to remind her of her past mistakes. Little does she know, how major her connection to the rune really is.
  • Gamon: The King of Avalon, who, before acquiring that position was a mere lookout with the Arcane militia. He came from an abusive home, where his father beat him and his mother. After Gamon threatened to kill his father, he ran off to join the Arcane militia to escape family ties.
  • Lord Quinn: The ruler of Alastair, he's just as mentally disturbed and troubled as Drago. However he rules all of Alastair with an iron fist, placing all his focus on obtaining the Arcane rune, no matter what the cost.

Minor characters[edit]

  • Leo: The captain of the dragon Calvary. He's a extraordinary solider who actually believes that the Prince will make a decent leader. His main goal is to save his lover, Felicity, from a dungeon hidden within the Alastair region
  • The Black Knight: A decorated warrior in the Avalon army, who doesn't like that The Prince is now in charge of the kingdom
  • KIp: A young squire who suffers from epilepsy, but is a very gifted archer.

Location[edit]

Even though most of the novel takes place within Ashovania, Oglolor, and The OuterLands, 'The Planet' actually contains five regions: Ashovania (Center), Oglolor (North), Oskea (East), Kliahoqari (West), and Bruahm (South).

Production[edit]

Derrick R. Lafayette began writing the novel over a year ago, after watching Mawaru Penguindrum, an Anime based on fate. Being heavily inspired at the time to use 'fate' as the central theme of the book. However, by the time the book was halfway done, it revealed itself to be much more centered on 'circumstance', and the final 150 pages were written with a completely different agenda.
