The Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA) is an annual programme covering Asian cuisine from restaurants and takeaways across the UK.[1] While honouring other aspects of the hospitality sector, such as exemplary service or restaurant management, ARTA promotes the art of culinary cooking. Over 100,000 customers vote each year for their favourite local Asian restaurants throughout the UK.[2][3]

Since their creation, the awards have attracted public figures, celebrities and politicians from different political parties of the Asian community. The first event was hosted at the House of Lords by the Baroness Uddin and was attended by MPs like Rushanara Ali, Paul Scully, Lucy Frazer and Rupa Huq.[4]

History and structure[edit]

The ARTA programme was founded in 2017[5] by Mohammad Munim and officially launched on 17th of October.[6]

The competition takes place over a thirty-week period with candidates selected through an open public vote.[7] All chosen restaurants are then invited to attend a series of regional cook-off events at various locations throughout the UK.[8] The competition concludes with a gala event where final winners are announced and awarded.[9][10] The 2022 Gala event was held on the 2nd of October at the O2 Intercontinental, London.[11] The ARTA event will return in 2023, on October 8th.[12][13]

Selection procedure[edit]

The Restaurants are awarded based on three key factors which are quality of food, quality of service, and value for money as well as food hygiene ratings and reviews from websites such as TripAdvisor and Google.[14] Based on these factors, an ARTA score was calculated. The restaurants that made through the scoring phase were judged and invited to participate in a Cook-Off Competition.[15] The scoring was based on flavour, appearance, texture, hygiene, and aroma.[16]
