Asit Baran Adhikary

Asit Baran Adhikary (born 27 August 1957) is a cardiac surgeon who has made the most significant contributions to the field in Bangladesh. He is the chairman of the Cardiac Surgery Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU)[1] (since 11 July, 2015) and the chief of the special unit of cardiac surgery. The second successful coronary artery bypass surgery in Bangladesh was done by him in 1994. He also performed the first conscious / awake off-pump bypass surgery in Bangladesh. He is the president-elect for the Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia (ATCSA) congress to be held in Bangladesh.[2] He was a freedom fighter of the liberation war (1971) of Bangladesh.

Early life[edit]

He is the eldest son of Kunja Behari Adhikary and Kamala Adhikary. He was born 27 August 1957 the village Jayarabad situated in Jessore, Bangladesh. His family was well known for jute trade back then. Just before his matriculation exam in 1971 the Bangladesh Liberation War broke out. Because of the nine-month war, the matriculation examination was cancelled that year. He passed the matriculation exam (SSC) in 1972. After passing his intermediate exam he enrolled in Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Barisal to pursue an MBBS.

Education[edit]

Adhikary graduated in 1982 from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC), Barisal, completed post-graduation in 1991 (MS in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery). In 2006 he earned Ph.D & D.Sc degrees in cardiothoracic surgery from West Coast University in the United States. He received special training from Prof. George E. Reed, Ph.D (pioneer in bypass surgery) in bypass surgery in 1993, received special training from Prof. Michael Ellis DeBakey (father of cardiac surgery) in bypass and aortic surgery in 1997.

He married Sabita Mandal in 1985. He is the father of two children: Abhijit Adhikary and Dipannita Adhikary. His son-in-law Redoy Ranjan is a post-graduate student of cardiac surgery.

Adhikary has performed more than 5000 coronary artery bypass (CABG) heart surgeries. He performed the second successful cardiac bypass surgery in Bangladesh in 1994. He was also a vital member of the team of surgeons that performed the first successful cardiac bypass surgery. He has started more than 20 new cardiac surgery procedures in Bangladesh including off-pump coronary artery bypass, mitral valve replacement without cutting off all leaflets, cosmetic bypass surgery, bypass surgery using bilateral internal mammary arteries, replacement of the aorta, the modified Bentall procedure and the Lecompte procedure.

He is well-known for expertise in off-pump bypass surgery, heart valve repair and replacement, conscious/ awake off-pump bypass surgery, mini sternotomy, ventricular septal defect closure, atrial septal defect closure, modified BTT shunt procedure, total surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot, repair of congenital heart disease in pediatric patients, and total arterial revascularization.

He has the highest number of coronary atherectomy procedures done in the Indian sub-continent. In 2015 he has done the world's largest successful atherectomy (14 cm). He is the only surgeon in Bangladesh and one of the few in Asia who perform the full spectrum of cardiac surgery.

Achievements[edit]

Adhikary has published more than 40 articles in many national and international journals. He was elected as the Chairman of the department of cardiac surgery of BSMMU on 11 July 2015. He is also the Chief of Special Unit, Cardiac Surgery Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and President of Organizing Committee of the 26th annual congress of ATCSA to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2016.
