Asopa Films Incorporation, commonly known as Asopa Films Inc or Asopa Films, is a Canadian independent film production company based in Toronto, Ontario and founded by actor, director, and producer, Mukesh Asopa, in 2008.[2] As of 2021, Asopa Films has produced, filmed, and released six films – Aisha and Rahul (2009), The Taste of Relation (2009), Zombie Beach (2010), Chambers Gate (2012), Depth of Pyaar (2019), and Blood Romeo (2021).[3] The company also has four planned upcoming films – Postal Code, Untitled Zombie Film, Universal Greed, and Sri Dungargarh – each of which has either been announced and/or is in pre-production.[4]

Company[edit]

Asopa Films Inc was founded in 2008 by actor, director, and producer, Mukesh Asopa, in Toronto, Ontario.[2]

Founder's background[edit]

Raised in Calcutta, India, Asopa’s introduction into film as a child was watching the black and white films of Indian Oscar-awarded filmmaker, Satyajit Ray, before his introduction to Hollywood movies later in his childhood.[5] In 1999, Asopa earned his university degree from the University of Calcutta, then went on to earn his post-graduate Business Management degree from ICFAI as well as a certification from CMA London.[6] He is an alumnus of the Barry John Acting Studio.[7] At age 24, Asopa moved to Canada and began working as an actor, making his acting debuts in the 2006 productions Bolly Double (voice work) and No Place to Hide (on screen).[2] Shortly thereafter, Asopa expanded from acting into production and storytelling, began working on his own film projects, and became a member of the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC).[5] In 2009, Asopa and Asopa Films released its first film, Aisha and Rahul. Asopa cites Quentin Tarantino as an inspiration for his directing and storytelling styles.[8]

Asopa Films team and work[edit]

Asopa Films’ core team includes the following individuals:

Asopa Films’ productions integrate Eastern and Western film styles and a diversity of genre, including comedy, romance, crime, drama, thriller, and horror.[1][5]

As of 2021, Asopa Films has produced six films – Aisha and Rahul (2009), The Taste of Relation (2009), Zombie Beach (2010), Chambers Gate (2014), Depth of Pyaar (2019), and Blood Romeo (2021)[7] – each of which has been produced, or co-produced, and directed, or co-directed, by Mukesh Asopa. Asopa Films’ first six films cumulatively won approximately 96 awards and earned 58 additional nominations. Most Asopa Films’ films are available on various over-the-top (OTT) platforms, including Amazon Prime and Inspire TV.[2]

Films[edit]

Aisha and Rahul (2009)[edit]

Aisha and Rahul, co-directed by Asopa and Milind Swamy, marked Asopa Films’ first released production. The romantic comedy juxtaposed Eastern and Western cultures and values and the trials and tribulations of a Western-raised Indian girl and freshly immigrated boy raised in India as they navigate the intersection of the differing cultures, values, and societies.[9] The film employed a non-chronological order of scenes in its storytelling to gradually build to its climax. Aisha and Rahul received positive critical feedback for its directing and cinematography.[10]

The film first screened in 2009 at the Canada International Film Festival in Vancouver and Las Vegas International Film Festival, where it won the Jury Award and the Jury Prize Golden Ace Award, respectively. Aisha and Rahul later earned the Golden Palm Award at the 2009 Mexico International Film Festival.[11]

The Taste of Relation (2009)[edit]

In 2010, Asopa Films released its second Asopa-directed production, The Taste of Relation, a family drama that depicted the lives and experiences of an immigrant family struggling to navigate the disparities between their personal morality and that of the new Canadian culture in which they live.[2][12]

With seven award wins and two other nominations, The Taste of Relation earned international recognition, particularly for its directing, cinematography, and overall presentation as a feature film.[13] The film most notably earned the following honors: World Cinema Cinematography Award: Dramatic (2010 Amsterdam Film Festival); Special Jury Prize Grand Winner (2010 California Film Awards); Rising Star Award (2010 Canada International Film Festival); Jury Prize Official Finalist (2010 Las Vegas International Film Festival); Golden Palm Award for Feature Film (2010 Mexico International Film Festival); Platinum Reel Award for Feature Film (2010 Nevada International Film Festival); and the Directors Award for Best Directing in a Feature Film (2018 Directors Awards).[14][15][16]

Zombie Beach (2010)[edit]

In 2010, Asopa Films made its introduction into the horror genre with its Asopa-directed third release, Zombie Beach, including release in U.S. Carmike theaters in 2014.[3] Zombie Beach entailed apocalyptic strife and warfare between good and evil, which resulted in the certification of the subject beach (primary setting) to the “evil.” The film chronicles the protagonists’ terrifying fight for survival after finding themselves on the “Zombie”-laden beach.[17] Zombie Beach screened at the Port Townsend Film Festival in Washington; the Housefull Theatre at the 2011 Jaipur International Film Festival in India, where it was nominated for the Red Rose Award nomination; and was selected as an Official Selection at the 2013 Cyprus International Film Festival in Cyprus.[3][1]

Chambers Gate (2014)[edit]

Asopa and Charles Ross (directorial debut) co-directed Asopa Films’ fourth production of the gritty crime drama, Chambers Gate, in which Asopa also plays the lead character.[18] In Chambers Gate, Jules Akola (Asopa), a government official, publicly condemns and vows to extinguish the concerningly mounting drug trade-related street crime in his district, and is forced to confront the resulting fallout.[19] The film guides its audience through a journey of violence, mystery, corruption, deception, and interpersonal and intra-personal conflict as Akola and his fellow lead characters navigate the challenges before them.

Chambers Gate collected 17 awards and nine other nominations for the production and performances therein.[20] Asopa earned the Triangle Award (Acting, Directing, Producing) at the 2014 Columbia Gorge International Film Festival.[21] He also received Best Actor, Lead Actor, and Special Mention Actor nods at the: Award of Merit (2014 Accolade Global Film Competition); Jury Prize and February Award (2017 European Cinematography Awards); Gold Award (2017 International Independent Film Awards); Jury Award (2017 Los Angeles Film Awards); Best Director (Mukesh Asopa, Charles Ross) (2018 Alaska International Film Awards); and Special Marquee Award for Best Film (2018 American Movie Awards).[22][23][24][25][15] Chambers Gate also earned award wins and nominations for Best Director, Best Film, and Best Feature Film at several film festivals. The film received a positive reception from critics for its presentation of internal character perspective to create a more personal and emotional experience for the audience, as well as for its “brilliant camerawork and a solid music score.”[19]

Depth of Pyaar (2019)[edit]

Asopa Films’ fifth production, Depth of Pyaar, presents a “deliberately broad scope of its narrative, with elements of crime, family drama, mystery, romance and thriller all blending together.”[26] The film had a production budget of $225,000 and was filmed in Toronto from 2017-2018.[27] Depth of Pyaar was first screened and released in 2019. The film depicts a story of two brothers – one an attorney, one socially isolated related to his medical condition, and both played by Asopa – who, along with their families, find themselves in the crosshairs of a murderous criminal.[28]Pyaar” meaning “love” in Hindi, the film chronicles how the lengths to which its protagonist family members for the love of one another in the face of adversity and tests of the familial bond and love – the “depth of pyaar.” The title consisting of both English and Hindi is an analogous foreshadowing to the content of the film as the dialogue consistently includes and shifts between both languages.[29]

Depth of Pyaar stands as Asopa and Asopa Films’ most critically acclaimed production to date – having earned over 50 awards on over 90 total nominations.[28] The film also qualified for the 2021 Academy Awards.[1] This recognition included for the film’s individual and ensemble acting performances, directing, producing, cinematography, editing, music, and overall production.[27] The film received a positive reception from critics for Asopa and Ross’ directing performance, specifically for the “variety of dynamic shots and a consistently engaging pace” and “well constructed” sequences, as well as for Asopa's acing performance in depicting multiple characters – two brothers – with sharply distinctive personalities and attributes.[26][30]

Bloody Romeo (2021)[edit]

Asopa Films’ most recent film, Bloody Romeo, encapsulates a blend of genre components from thriller to dark comedy.[5] The film’s 2021 release represented the culmination of a five-year effort to craft the production, which included several days of shooting in Kingston, Ontario in extreme weather conditions of -50 degrees.[5][28] Bloody Romeo completed filming in 2019 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, in part due to the challenges of the pandemic, the post-production process spanned nearly two years.[8] The film premiered in Ontario, Canada on October 31, 2021, Halloween.[1]

Bloody Romeo presents universal themes and subject matter of human internal struggles and suicidal ideations in its depiction of the introverted protagonist, Romeo's, navigation of the circumstances of a mysterious spike in suicides around him.[5] Asopa has stated that the inspiration for Bloody Romeo derives from real issues, namely suicide, that occur in every community around the world, but are under-addressed socially and culturally.[31] Critics described Bloody Romeo as “a disturbing, cautiously erratic, and grueling love story like no other.”[32]

The film has been submitted to 20 Oscars Submission Qualifying film festivals, more than 40 festivals in total, and earned selection for the Asian Film Festival in Hollywood, the SoCal Film Awards in California, and the Idyllwild International Film Festival.[3][28] Of these submissions, Bloody Romeo has earned ten awards to date, including: Best Narrative Feature and Best Director (Mukesh Asopa) (2021 Toronto Film Magazine Awards); Awards of Recognition for Feature Film and Leading Actor (Mukesh Asopa) (2021 Accolade Competition); Best Script (2021 Chhatrapati Shivaji International Film Festival); Best Feature Film (2021 European Cinematography Awards, March Edition); and Best Director (Mukesh Asopa) (2021 Florence Film Awards).[33]

Upcoming films[edit]

Asopa Films is in pre-production on two projects, Postal Code and Universal Greed. The company has also announced Sri Dungargarh and an untitled zombie film. For each of these upcoming films, Asopa has and will be working in director, producer, writer, and actor capacities. The projected release dates of these upcoming films have not yet been announced.[12][4]
