Astro Colony is a voxel-based sandbox game focused on construction and management simulation, developed by Terad Games..[1]. The game was released in Early Access on the 7th November 2022[2] for Microsoft Windows, and it was developed on Unreal Engine 4[3]. The game is designed for both single-player and multiplayer.
Gameplay[edit]
Astro Colony is an open world, first-person based game which focuses on space exploration, automation, construction and management simulation[4]. It was inspired by video games like Factorio, Minecraft, Space Engineers[5] and Raft[6].
The game has a unique approach that offers to the user multiple styles of playing, giving the possibility to focus on automation, design or exploration[7].
The players explore a procedurally generated universe to set up one or more constellations of colonies, to acquire the necessary resources and improve the quality of goods and structures.
By investing more resources and facilities, it will be possible to create different automated factory-style systems - which develop mining, transportation, processing resources and assembling products[8]. Another special feature of Astro Colony is that the planets can be docked to the colony station, allowing to travel with them too. The player starts on a small raft-like surface and he can travel through the space by the aid of thrusters to explore automatically generated planets.
The planets, which are voxel-made and constantly procedurally generated, provide both resources and extra surface to enlarge the factory[9]. Moreover, it is possible to mine, destroy or even to reshape the planets, according to the player’s choices.
Materials, buildings and skills can be unlocked through the Technology Tree, which conveys over 70 different technologies[10].
Basic structures are unlocked for the simplest technology points obtained by extracting resources from asteroids, and with the advancement of the technologies will be possible to automatize the production with Bots (Transport, Miner, Farmer, Breeder, Fabricator), conveyor belts and pipes.
In the next stage, NPC astronauts arrive to settle, and they contribute to advance and discover new technologies. They can be trained to assume one of the following roles: Cook, Scientist, Engineer. The player must also take care that meals and shelter are provided[11].
While exploring the space, players have to avoid dangerous cosmic events like meteorite strikes, solar winds and black holes[12], which can put the colony at risk.
Development[edit]
The game is currently developed by Terad Games, located in Poland.
The company was founded in January 2020. The development and programming are led by the solo programmer Lukasz Tefel Czarnecki[13][14].
No publisher has been involved in the game release[15].
Astro Colony 's development was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, issued by Terad Games[16].
The campaign lasted from the 29 of June to the 29 July, in year 2021, and it collected €34,763 out of the minimum goal of €10,000. Following the crowdfunding success, Terad Games released the Beta version of the game in December 2021. Astro Colony was opened to Early Access on Steam on the 7th November 2022[17].
The game was awarded in 2022 with an Epic Mega Grants, by Epic Games[18], and with a “Dziki”, by Foundation Indie Games Polska and Game Industry Conference, for the best independent Polish game of 2022[19].
The future developments for the release will include: dedicated servers, 3+ multiplayer-mode, terraforming and natural regeneration of planets[20], mod support[21], Linux and Mac compatibility and Steam Deck controls[22]
The supported languages are: English, French, German, Hungarian[23], Italian, Japanese[24], Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian[25], simplified Chinese, Spanish.
Reviews[edit]
The overall reviews are in the range of Very positive. Many positive reviews are pointing out the potential of the game, the general quiet pace of the gameplay and the nice graphic. Negative reviews mainly concern lack of tutorial information, multiplayer desync, bot pathfinding and lack of realism[26]
