The Ataman Brotherhood (Turkish: Ataman Kardeşliği) is a Turkish paramilitary fascist and neo-Nazi group. They rose to popularity around May 2022 and they mostly engage in public brawls and attacks. They also have a very strong base online.[1]

Ideology[edit]

The Ataman Brotherhood are an extremist group which hates everyone who is not an ethnically Turkic. They are also anti-refugee and frequently engage in beatings, attacks, and brawls with Arab and Afghan refugees. One of their members said in a video that "either you desert rats leave our country, or we will make it your grave." The Ataman Brotherhood also calls Turks to attack refugees and migrants. The group also states that they "should end this occupation and shed the blood of other ethnicities, do not be afraid of being called racists or fascists. We will lose our homeland if we aren’t racist today." They created and posted an "Attack Pyramid", which had their main targets on top of the pyramid and their minor targets on the bottom. According to the pyramid, Arabs were at the very top, followed by Kurds, Afghans, Pakistanis, Jews, Black people, Persians, Armenians, Greeks, Albanians, and then Circassians at the very bottom.[2]

Attacks[edit]

The Ataman Brotherhood engages in lots of beatings and attacks on mostly refugees and rivals. Their attacks are also mostly recorded and posted to recruit more people into joining them. Notable videos and attacks include:[3][4]

  • Their most famous attack, a group member names Kemal Korkmaz poured gasoline over sleeping Syrians, identified as 23-year-old Mamoun al-Nabhan, 21-year-old Ahmed al-Ali, and 17-year-old Muhammed el-Bish, on Nov. 16. He admitted in court to having committed the hate crime.
  • In a video, the group was patrolling the streets and beat up a man who they found out was Afghan.
  • In another video, they beat a Syrian man with a club.
  • In another video, a group member wearing a balaclava and holding a combat knife was holding the ID of an Afghan man. He said that the group had beaten the man and confiscated his ID card.

Politics[edit]

After the Turkish Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu made a statement supporting Syrians in Turkey, the Ataman Brotherhood gathered around the Ministry building to protest. Before the gathering, they published a message saying "to show Süleyman Soylu, the monument of failure and the black stain on Turkish history, who went on television to support the Syrian perverts fleeing the war and insulted those who defended the future of Turkey by calling on protection of Syrians, we will gather in front of you at 11:00 am in Ankara at the Ministry of Interior Affairs to show that Mr. Ümit Özdağ is not alone. This call is for everyone who loves their homeland." After what happened, Ümit Özdağ has stressed that neither him nor his Victory Party have any connection to the Ataman Brotherhood and he criticized Soylu for sparking such a reaction from the Turkish far-right.[5][6]
