Atsunori Kamiya

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Atsunori Kamiya (神谷 厚範, Kamiya Atsunori) is a Japanese physician and medical scientist (physiology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience). He was a Professor of Cellular Physiology at Division of Biophysiological Sciences, Graduate School of Medical, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University in Japan.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Career

Kamiya graduated and obtained his medical degree from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine in 1994, and completed his Ph.D at Nagoya University in 2000. He worked as an assistant professor at the Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, Nagoya University from 2000, and moved to the Department of Cardiovascular Dynamics, National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center (NCVC) Research Institute as a physician-scientist in 2002, becoming the head of the Laboratory of Circulation Model Analysis in 2017. Kamiya moved to Okayama University Medical School as a professor in 2018.[2][3][4] He has authored more than 150 research articles (including review articles).[7]

He and his collaborators published a research article titled "Genetic manipulation of autonomic nerve fiber innervation and activity and its effect on breast cancer progression" in Nature Neuroscience in 2019.[8][9] The study showed how stimulation of different types of nerves within breast tumors can determine the fate of the cancer. On 24 March 2023, Okayama University and the NCVC announced that the article contained 113 fabrications.[10][11][12][13] Kamiya failed to provide primary experimental results to the investigative committees, claiming that the hard disk drive (in his former laboratory, NCVC in Suita, Osaka) that stored experimental data fell and malfunctioned during the 2018 Osaka earthquake as well as experimental records (paper documents) were also disposed of because they were soaked in chemical solutions and became illegible.[10][11] On 17 April 2023, Okayama University announced that it dismissed Kamiya on disciplinary grounds as of the 14th.[5][6]
