Komatsu Shioske (Japanese: 小松勝助, April 28, 1923, Japan - April 21, 2000, Osaka, Japan) — Japanese translator, educator, literary critic and poet. Honorary Professor of the Institute of Foreign Languages in Kobe.

Biography[edit]

He visited the Soviet Union twice. He did an internship and taught at Moscow University for some time.

Works[edit]

Translator of works by Russian and Ukrainian writers.

He studied the Ukrainian language. In 1959 in the "Anthology of World Poetry" (Tokyo, 1959, vol. 12) he published his translation of 8 works by T. Shevchenko "Katerina", "Ivan Pidkova", "Dumka", "Perebendya", the ballad "Poplar", "My thoughts, my thoughts, I'm in trouble with you!". During 1947-1978 he published 15 investigations into Taras Shevchenko, whose work he popularized. He translated the poems "The Caucasus" and "The Mercenary". The translations "My Thoughts, My Thoughts…", "To Osnovyanenko", "Tarasova Night" and "Heretic" are included in the first separate edition of Taras Shevchenko's works in Japan "How I Will Die…" (わ た し が 死 ん だ ら(1964 年), Tokyo, 1964). In the Handbook of the Best Works of World Literature (Tokyo, 1962, vol. 4), Komatsu reviewed the Kobzar.

Komatsu is also the author of articles about Taras Shevchenko and Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky in the Encyclopedia Nipponica.[1][2]
