Azim Karimov (Russian: Ази́м Дале́рович Кари́мов; born 29 March 1991 in Pärnu, Estonia) is a Russian conductor.

Early life[1][edit]

Azim Karimov was born in Pärnu, Estonia, his mother’s hometown. His father is from Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Karimov’s parents met in Moscow, when they were both students at Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. After they got married, they decided to stay in Moscow.

Azim showed interest and talent in classical music since early childhood, taking recorder and oboe classes. However, he had intended to follow in his parents’ footsteps and study medicine, and it wasn't until his last year of high school that he chose to pursue music as a career. In 2008 he enrolled to study oboe performance under the supervision of Prof. Anatoly Lubimov at Schnittke Moscow State Institute of Music, from which he graduated in 2012. It was during his years at Schnittke Institute that Karimov first got into conducting and started a student chamber orchestra “Entre Nous” with himself as the leader and conductor.

In 2018 Karimov graduated from Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with a diploma in Opera and Symphony Conducting under the supervision of Prof. Gennady Rozhdestvensky, CBE. Karimov was the last student taught by Prof. Rozhdestvensky.[2]

Since 2018 Karimov has stayed on at the Conservatory as a postgraduate fellow and teaching assistant under the supervision of Prof. Anatoly Levin. At the same time, he worked on an academic research of conductors' “retuschen” in Beethoven’s symphonies under the supervision of Prof. Inna Barsova, D.Arts.

During his studies at the Conservatory, Karimov took part in numerous master classes led by world-renowned conductors, including Vladimir Jurowski, Vasily Petrenko, Vassily Sinaisky and Howard Griffiths. He also worked as an assistant conductor with Vladimir Jurowski, Mikhail Jurowski, Daniele Rustioni and Martyn Brabbins.

In 2016 and 2017 Karimov was an active participant of Diaghilev Festival’s educational programme and master classes taught by Teodor Currentzis.

Career[edit]

During Diaghilev Festival 2017, in addition to the educational programme, Azim Karimov was invited to take part in the festival’s main programme as the musical director of the “#bradburyopera” project. It was the world premiere of the opera “The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl”, composed by A. Besogonov (director Asya Chaschinskaya). The production was highly acclaimed by music critics and made the long list of the Golden Mask (Russian National Theatre Award).

In May 2018, Karimov headed the 26th Kyoto International Music Festival in Japan. Every year, the festival’s board chooses a young conductor from a different country that is asked to head the event, and Karimov became the first Russian conductor to ever receive the invitation.[3]

In November 2018, he was awarded a special prize at the II Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition in Budapest.

In 2019, Karimov became the winner of the I Almaty International Competition of Opera and Symphony Conductors.[4]

Later in 2019, Karimov’s Chamber Orchestra “Entre nous” took part in the Moscow premiere of Benjamin Britten's parable-opera “Curlew River”, a joint project of the Moscow Conservatory and the Royal College of Music in London with the support of the British Embassy in Russia.[5]

Also in 2019, Karimov was appointed Chief Conductor of the Moscow State Chamber Orchestra of Pavel Slobodkin Centre.

Since March 2020 he has served as Conductor of Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (with Ivan Rudin as Artistic Director).

In 2021, Karimov worked with Opéra National de Lyon on Rimsky-Korsakov's “The Golden Cockerel”. The production was presented at Aix-en-Provence Festival (Festival international d'art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence).[6]

In 2022, he was invited to head two opera productions in Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow as the musical director.[7]

In 2022 Azim Karimov put his career in Russia on hold and left the country.
