Babaji Bhosale (1549–1597) was a 16th-century Maratha nobleman and the father of Maloji Bhosale, who rose to prominence under the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. Babaji is best known as the grandfather of Shahaji and the great-grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire.
Early Life
Born in 1549 in the Deccan region of India, Babaji Bhosale served as a patil (village chief) of the villages of Hingni Berdi and Devalgaon near present-day Pune, Maharashtra. As patil, he was responsible for village governance, administration, and maintaining order.[1]
Family and Clan
Babaji belonged to the Bhonsle clan, a Maratha warrior lineage. The family later claimed descent from the Sisodia Rajput royal house of Udaipur, a claim that would enhance their royal credentials in later generations, particularly during Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation.[2][3]
Legacy
Babaji’s son Maloji Bhosale (b. 1552) served under the Jadhavs of Sindhkhed before rising in the ranks of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate under the command of Malik Ambar. In recognition of his service, Maloji was granted the title of "Raja" and awarded jagirs, including Pune and control over strategic forts like Shivneri and Chakan.
Through Maloji, Babaji Bhosale laid the foundation of a dynasty that would eventually rise to royal power in the Deccan. His grandson Shahaji and great-grandson Shivaji would go on to shape the political future of India in the 17th century.[4][5]
Babaji Bhosale died in 1597.
