Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS ) is a professional degree of study on Siddha system of medicine offered in India and [1]Sri Lanka at undergraduate level .Siddha medical system is a complete system starting with in depth philosophies and practice defined in the ancient Indian texts and treatise belonging to ancient Dravidian culture such as Agathiyam, Thirumandhiram and others mainly .
In India, the study of B.S.M.S. is coming under the government AYUSH ministry with its National Commission of Indian System of Medicine(NCISM) defining its curriculum along with its regulations. As per these regulations the undergraduate course B.S.M.S., consists of three professions and spread over four and half years ,followed by one year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship
ABOUT[edit]
The study of Siddha Medicine basically involves three life constituents and seven physical constituents. Life constituents are viz., Vatha, Pitha and Kapha. The physical constituents are viz., Plasma, Blood, Muscle, Fat, Bone, Nerve and Semen. These constituents are all together activated by five natural elements such as Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Studies in Siddha system of medicine is very well supported by Bio-Chemistry and Micro biology which explains the age old concepts in scientific terminologies and usage.
The study at undergraduate level involves Anatomy, Physiology, Medicinal Botany, Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Matria Medica, Research Methodology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Hygiene and preventive Medicine, diagnosis with ‘Nadi’ (reading of pulse based diagnosis) , ‘ Varmam’ ( external selective specific points pressure therapies ) and Thokkanam ( external corrective therapies) among others

In India , the institutions offering the B.S.M.S. course are available in Tamil Nadu and Kerala states. There is a total of 12 colleges in India 11 colleges in Tamilnadu and 1 college in Kerala. The main colleges are National Institute of Siddha at Chennai, Tamilnadu offering both undergraduate and post graduate level courses. Santhigiri SIddha Medical College in Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala Offering Siddha in English Medium. These courses are governed by National Commission of Indian System of Medicine(NCISM) and affiliated to relevant health universities of concerned state. The respective State Councils accord the registration of medical practitioner based on the domicile
Srilanka[edit]
Siddha Medicine was established in 1929 along with Ayurveda and Unani under the College of Indigenous Medicine, at Borella. The Board of Indigenous Medicine awarded Diploma in Indigenous Medicine and Surgery (DIMS) until 1961. The Degree conferred since 1983 on Siddha Medicine is Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS).
After the ethnic disturbances occurred in 1983, the Siddha section was transferred from the University of Colombo to the University of Jaffna on 2nd July 1984.The Department of Siddha Medicine became a separate Unit under the direct administration of the Vice-Chancellor since 1st October 1993.

Siddha Medical practice have been included under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM) Division of Ministry of Health, Malaysia(4).
