Dr. Harvey J. Kaltsas, A.P. is an active medical practitioner and remains the owner operator of the Healing Centre in Sarasota, FL for over 33 years. As a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Kaltsas is an Acupuncture Physician also practicing electroacupuncture, Qi Gong, oriental massage, herbal therapy, dietary guidelines, and other adjunctive therapies. He has been an active acupuncture practitioner and an influential advocate of Traditional Chinese Medicine since before it became popular in the United States. In 1993, Dr. Kaltsas was honored by the People's Republic of China for having made Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At a time when acupuncture treatment faced opposition and political pressure in the United States, his leadership and testimony is credited for gaining Congressional support for the inclusion of Acupuncture under medical insurance policies. Dr. Kaltsas is also an educator, author, and entrepreneur with extensive business, clinical, educational, fundraising, governmental, journalistic, and political experience. He has been instrumentally involved in: the creation, funding, and management of clinics, colleges, and professional associations of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine; the writing, passage, and administration of laws and regulations governing the practice of Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine Nationally and in the state of Florida; the authoring and publication of many articles and several books in the field of alternative healthcare; the creation, financing, building, and marketing of Kanaya, a $35,000,000 green condominium project in Sarasota, Florida;[1] and the creation and funding of a million gallon per year bio-diesel facility in Portland, Maine.

Professional Practice[edit]

Dr. Kaltsas has been a Doctor of Traditional Oriental Medicine and an Acupuncture Physician for the past 40 years. He began apprenticing with two of the renowned doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Drs. James Tin Yau So and John Ho Fen Shenin Boston in 1975-1976. In 1977, he practiced Addictionology at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Center in Bronx, New York, 1977. In 1977 he moved to Tucson, Arizona where he held a private practice during 1977-1978. In 1979, he moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he joined a private practice association with Chiropractor Dr. Ed McGivern, and Dr. Harold Manner and Murray Susser, MD. Dr. Susser was then President of the American Holistic Medical Association and Dr. Harold Manner was then Chair of the Department of Biology at Loyola University in Chicago. Dr. Kaltsas credits Drs. McGivern, Hammer and Susser for introducing Dr. Kaltsas to the realm of nutritional therapies in years 1979 through 1981. In 1982, Dr. Kaltsas moved to Sarasota, FL where he still resides today. He has owned and operated The Healing Centre in Sarasota for over 33 years where he serves clients who seek treatment from around the world. The Healing Centre specializes in integrative medicine, acupuncture, nutrition, and Traditional Oriental Medicine. In 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 he was selected to serve as treating Acupuncture Physician to the annual conferences of the National Foundation for Women Legislators.

Ketogenic Specialist[edit]

In 2015, Dr. Kaltsas became a designated Specialist for a leading ketone distributor. As a leading medical professional and nutritionist, Dr. Kaltsas is a supporter of supplementation with exogenous ketones and nutritional butyrate intake. As a medical professional, he has spoken publicly about the amount of peer reviewed clinical research regarding the potential benefits of ketogenic diets, and ketone and butyrate intake as part of an optimized and healthy lifestyle. The Specialist title has been designated by the same distribution company granted a license from a major Research University for its patented formulation for achieving high levels of blood ketone levels, with or without dietary restrictions. Dr. Kaltsas also writes the Get Ketogenic blog, a resource for ketone related topics.

Educator[edit]

While maintaining his medical practice Dr. Kaltsas has also served as an educator. Most recently, Dr. Kaltsas was the Co-Founder, Dean, and a Professor at the East West College in Sarasota, FL from 1994 to 1999. From 1992 to 1993, he served as the Co-Founder, Dean, and Professor at the Suncoast School of Acupuncture in Tampa, FL. From 1985 through 1988, he served as an Instructor at the Florida Institute of T.C.M., St. Petersburg, FL. Between 1982 and 1985, Dr. Kaltsas was an Instructor of Nutrition for Sarasota County Vocational Technical Institute. In the early 70's he was a French Teacher in Saskatchewan, Canada

Author and Editor[edit]

Dr. Kaltsas is a noted writer with no less than 3 books and many published articles. Dr. Kaltsas is Author of: X-Rayed to Death, Safeguarding Your Family's Health Against A Major Cause of Cancer and Heart Disease, Acupuncture Works - the Proof and Massage Works – the Proof, and several articles for Alternative Medicine magazine.[2][3][4][5] He was named Contributing Editor to Alternative Medicine magazine in 2001. In 2013, he Co-authored 7 Reasons to Avoid Spine Surgery. From 2001 to 2015, Dr. Kaltsas was responsible authoring or co-authoring 20 nationally approved and accredited continuing education courses. In the early 1980s, Dr. Kaltsas became the Editor of the Florida Acupuncturist newsletter distributed by the Florida State Oriental Medical Association (FSOMA). He was also A Contributor to several sections of the book Alternative Medicine, the Definitive Guide,[6] and he is a contributor to Freedom's Phoenix e-magazine[7][8]

Continuing Education Coursework[edit]

In 2000, Dr. Kaltsas began teaching continuing education courses for licensed acupuncturists who had already graduated from four years of undergraduate college and four years of traditional Chinese medical school. In 2006 Dr. Kaltsas began offering online continuing education courses. Twenty continuing education courses are approved by the Florida Board of Acupuncture and the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists (NCCAOM), and 17 of these are approved by the California Acupuncture Board. Over 1700 practitioners have taken at least one of Dr. Kaltsas' continuing education classes.

Awards, Associations & Boards of Directors[edit]

Dr. Kaltsas' has played a leadership role in a number of organizations throughout his lifetime. From 1985-87 he served two terms as President of the Florida State Oriental Medical Association (FSOMA), until in1987 he was appointed by Governor Martinez to serve on the Florida Department of Health's Board of Acupuncture. In 1988, Dr. Kaltsas was elected Chairman of the Board of Acupuncture in which office he served from 1988-1990. During this time, he created and legalized the term "Acupuncture Physician". In 1991, Dr. Kaltsas co-founded the Suncoast School of Acupuncture in Tampa where he served as Academic Dean. Then, in 1992, he was elected President of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine which he served until 1994.[9] As President, he successfully spearheaded efforts to get acupuncture needles reclassified by the FDA. He also was a consultant to the National Institutes of Health. In 1993, he was consultant for the staff of Hillary Rodham Clinton on the treatment of stroke with acupuncture.[10] In 1994, he co-founded Sarasota's East West College of Natural Medicine where he served as President and Academic Dean until 2000. In 1996, Dr. Kaltsas was voted "Acupuncturist of the Year" by the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Board of Directors. In 1998, Governor Bush reappointed Dr. Kaltsas to serve on the Board of Acupuncture which he did until 2000. As Dean of East West College, his coursework was awarded accreditation for its Master's level program in Oriental Medicine by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Kaltsas served as President of the Kanaya Condominium Association, a $35 million 37 unit luxury condominium he developed in downtown Sarasota that was the first green condo ever built in the USA. Since 2012, he has served as Vice-President (FL) of the AFL-CIO's National Guild for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NGAOM).

The National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) certifies both acupuncturists and their continuing education training. Dr. Kaltsas has maintained the NCCAOM's Diplomate Certification since 1987. In 2001 he was invited to become a Consultant to the NCCAOM's Public Relations Task Force. From 2000-2002, he also served as a Consultant to the Ministry of Natural Healthcare of Cuba and in conjunction with Dr. Friedrich Douwes, then President of the German Society of Oncologists, assisted in producing a seminar for every oncologist in Cuba on treatments for cancer using Hyperthermia, Electro-Cancer Therapy, and nutritional approaches.

Dr. Kaltsas has also worked closely with the staff of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) to whom he regularly recommends patients. He wrote of his experiences at CTCA in an article for Acupuncture Today.[11]

Political Activism[edit]

Dr. Harvey Kaltsas has twice served as a member of the Florida Department of Health's Board of Acupuncture, having first been appointed by Governor Bob Martinez in 1987 and then reappointed by Governor Jeb Bush in 1998. In 1987 he was elected Chair of the Board of Acupuncture and in 1998 Vice-Chair. While on the Board of Acupuncture, Dr. Kaltsas co-wrote most of the rules and laws governing the practice of acupuncture in Florida, which later served as a template for much of the acupuncture licensing legislation nationally.

In 1991 Dr. Kaltsas was a delegate to both the Democrat Presidential Primary Convention and the Republican Presidential Primary Convention in Florida. As a friend and adviser from 1990 to 1998 to Jerry Berlin, Chair of the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee from 1984–88, Dr. Kaltsas had occasion to discuss the role of acupuncture and preventative health care in meetings with President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Attorney General Janet Reno, and Senators Tom Daschle, Tom Harkin, Bob Kerrey, Barbara Mikulski, George Mitchell, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and Don Riegle. In 1993, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton requested that Dr. Kaltsas provide documents and advice on the use of acupuncture in the treatment of stroke. Dr. Kaltsas was then President of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM). Later in 1993, Senator Harkin, who chaired the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Healthcare Appropriations, invited Dr. Kaltsas to testify before his Senate Committee, and he is the first and only acupuncturist ever to testify before the Senate.[12]

From 1987 until 1995 Dr. Kaltsas worked to get the FDA to revise its position on acupuncture needles which it had classified as experimental devices in 1972. In 1994 Dr. Kaltsas studied with Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, taking his course in Renewing American Civilization at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. During those sessions he asked the Speaker to assist in getting the FDA to change its classification of acupuncture needles. Dr. Kaltsas met several times with FDA staff in Bethesda, Maryland, and the FDA finally changed that classification in 1995. He also presented to the National Institutes of Health's Office of Alternative Medicine Workshop on Acupuncture in 1995.[13]

From 1998 through 2011 Dr. Kaltsas served as attending Acupuncture Physician at the annual conventions of the National Foundation for Women Legislators, a period when he also was Legislative Chair for the AAAOM. During those years he met with Republican and Democrat members of Congress, among them Representatives Dan Burton, Linda Chavez, and Maxine Waters, to advocate for inclusion of acupuncturists as providers under Medicare.[14][15][16] In 2015, as Vice President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) National Guild for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, he met with California Congresswoman Judy Chu to support her efforts to pass the federal Acupuncture for Heroes and Seniors bill.
