Barbie Horse Trails is an open-world equestrian video game based on Mattel's Barbie. The game launched on October 10, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S.
Gameplay
Barbie Horse Trails is an open-world game played from a third-person perspective. Players can choose to take on the role of either Barbie "Malibu" or Barbie "Brooklyn" in Canterbury Trails Park, an open-world which includes lakesides, wildflower meadows, rugged mountain trails, and forests. Players design their own horse, named Lucky. The two Barbies are Junior Park Rangers-in-Training and must complete the objectives around the world to complete the game.[1][2] The player can navigate Canterbury Trails Park on foot or by horse.
Gameplay is based around various aspects of equestrianism. The more structured elements include time trials and obstacle courses that require precision jumping. Players can also brush, wash, and feed their horse through mini-games.[3] Due to the open-world design, players can approach objectives freely. Objectives include solving mysteries, restoring park areas, and discovering ancient artifacts with the help of Head Ranger Annalise, Archaeologist Dr. Potts, and Ken’s aunt, Lady Carson. Around the park, players can also interact with Barbie's friends Ken, Teresa, Nikki, and Daisy.[1] Players can use the in-world camera to capture animals on quests. Information about each animal will be documented in a journal.[3]
Players can also customize their chosen character and horse with outfits, gear, and colorful accessories like bridles, saddles, braids, and ribbons found in collectible chests.[3]
Development
Barbie Horse Trails was developed due to the Barbie brand's connection to horse riding. In a press statement, Mattel mentioned the popularity of previous Barbie equestrian video games – notably the Barbie Horse Adventures series (2003-2008) – and the 2024 Netflix series Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase.[1]
The game was published by Outright Games and developed by PHL Collective. The game was first announced on August 7, 2025.[4]
Erika Winterholler, the Head of Business Development – Digital Gaming at Mattel, stated in a press release the teams involved in development aimed to create a rich, hands-on adventure rooted in exploration and creativity. This would include unique environments, character customisation, and a variety of in-game challenges. Despite being aimed for young players, Winterholler stated that the gameplay is designed to be immersive, engaging, and fun for all ages. Stephanie Malham, Managing Director of Outright Games stated that the game is for fans of all ages, suggesting that the team aimed to tap into the nostalgia of audiences who played the Barbie Horse Adventures series.[5]

Reception
Barbie Horse Trails received generally positive reviews from critics. Movies Games and Tech of Metacritic praised it's child friendliness and open-world, however they noted it "isn't great for older children or adults". GameSpew of Metacritic noted its "cartoonish and perfunctory" graphics, but ultimately gave it a positive review.[10]
