Barry "The Punchline" Valentine, (born Harold Chester Wallenstein, 12 June 1956) is a British comedian, television presenter and philanthropist from Grotton, Lancashire. Despite moderate success during the 1980s, with a small number of appearances on British television, Valentine, dubbed "The Comedian's Comedian" never achieved mainstream success. His traditional style of stand-up was regarded by modern audiences as somewhat outdated, many of his routines built on classic set-ups such as mother-in-law jokes, race-related material and musical numbers.
After his mildly successful "Wigan Pier to Whitley Bay" tour, Valentine was offered a regional television contract for a Saturday night game show, which he wrote and directed along with his manager and lifelong friend Nigel Leigh Waterman. However, the programme was never aired due to censorship issues, as fear surrounded the show's concept and catchphrases, such as the 'Asiatic gentleman' skit and the phrase "catch that china, man!" Following this, Valentine spent several years performing at numerous hotels and bars in Benidorm.
He currently lives with his wife, Eileen Valentine in Lancashire. He continues to perform to this day and began his 'Barry's Back" tour in 2012.
