The Battle of Kelmendi (Albanian: Lufta e Kelmendit) was fought between Albanians of the Kelmendi tribe and an Ottoman army, it took place in 1638.[2][3][1] The Ottomans aimed to subdue the Kelmendi tribe due to their perceived threat to the government.[2] Led by a united army, the Ottomans faced fierce resistance from the Kelmendis, Despite being outnumbered, the Kelmendi tribe emerged victorious, inflicting substantial losses on the Ottoman forces.[2]

Prelude[edit]

Battle[edit]

As the Ottomans attempted to advance towards Tamarë, the Kelmendis destroyed a bridge between the two rivers, Cemi i Selcës and Cemi i Vuklit. However, the Ottomans persevered and built a new road to bypass the obstacle.[2]

In the ensuing battle, the Kelmendis counterattacked the scattered Ottoman forces in the valleys of Cemi and Brija. The Ottomans were caught off-guard and suffered significant casualties.[2][4]

Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Kelmendi warriors inflicted substantial losses on the Ottomans, forcing them to retreat. The Ottomans couldn't overcome the narrow gorge, which was defended by the Kelmendis, resulting in further losses for the Ottomans.[2]

After the battle, only a small fraction of the Ottoman army remained, while the Kelmendi tribe emerged victorious.[2][3][1] This battle marked a significant setback for the Ottoman government, which sought to suppress the Kelmendi tribe.[2][4]
