Battle of Vuhledar

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The battle of Vuhledar is a military engagement, as part of the offensive in eastern Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian forces and DNR forces engaged military operations against Ukrainian forces in the small town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk Oblast, which is close to the border between Ukraine on the one hand and Russia and the Donetsk People's Republic on the other day after taking control of the city of Volnovakha.

Background[edit]

On 1 March, Denis Pushilin, the head of the DPR, announced that DPR forces had almost completely surrounded the nearby city of Volnovakha and that they would soon do the same to Mariupol.[1] Russian artillery later bombarded Mariupol, causing over 21 injuries.[2]

On March 11, Ukraine formed 12 humanitarian corridors for evacuation from settlements that attacked Russian troops in various regions, including Volnovakha-Valerianivka-Novoandriyivka-Kirilivka-Vuhledar-Pokrovsk.[3]

On 12 March, Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Donetsk Oblast, stated that Russian forces had completely destroyed Volnovakha and that the city had "effectively ceased to exist", but that fighting continued.[4][5] The Associated Press confirmed that the city had been captured by pro-Russian separatists and much of it had been destroyed in the fighting.[6] Later, Ukrainian officials reported that Captain Pavlo Sbytov [uk], the commander of the Ukrainian 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion, had been killed in battle.[7]

Russian troops began urban fighting in Mariupol on March 12, concentrating a large number of their forces after taking control of the city of Volnovakha, and redirected a smaller number from position to tactical and positional fighting in Donetsk and launching a later major offensive in Donbas.[8][9][10]

On 14 March, a Ukrainian Su-25 was shot down by Russian forces in near Volnovakha. The pilot, Roman Vasyliuk, captured by Russian forces was later released on 24 April, by a Russo-Ukrainian prisioner swap.[11][12]

Battle[edit]

On March 13, the Russian occupiers continued to accumulate reserves to attack Vuhledar and began artillery strikes on residential areas of the city.[13]

On March 14, in the direction of Volnovakha, the enemy did not stop trying to break through in the direction of Vuhledar.[14]

Positional struggles[edit]

By the end of March, Ukrainian forces had successfully carried out a strategic withdrawal from Volnovakha to develop a strategic defense near the town of Vuhledar in order to stop the deeper penetration of the Russians from the south towards the established lines of defense in the western Donbas.

On April 2, on the east bank of the Dnieper: the 58th Army and the 71st Motorized Regiment successfully repulsed his attack on Vuhledar.[15]

In Vuhledar, in the Donetsk region, on April 6, the Russians, with the intention of storming the city from artillery, shot at a humanitarian aid warehouse, killing two and wounding five people.[16]

On April 7, also trying to continue the offensive in the areas of Vuhledar, rocket attacks on the places Marinka, Borivske and Solodke in the western Donbas were intensified. Russian troops fired at the city from a helicopter, after which one person was injured.[17]

On May 3, at around 6.30 am, the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region was shelled. Three people who came to get drinking water were killed, reports the publisher Publica.[18]

On May 16, another attempted offensive was made against Vuhledar in the direction of Kurakhove. However, the offensive attempt failed.[19]

On June 7, the enemy fired intensively at the positions of Ukrainian units in Vuhledar. There was an air strike and a rocket attack on the settlement of Vuhledar.[20]

On June 11, near the town of Vuhledar, in the Donetsk region, a Ukrainian defender from Lanochivchyna, a resident of the village of Borshchivka, thirty-year-old Roman Mihajlovich Druz, was killed in combat task during artillery shelling.[21]

On June 23, Russian army targeted the positions of Ukrainian troops in the direction of Vuhledar and Prečishtivka on the Novopavlovsk direction. Airstrikes were also carried out in the areas of Pavlivka and Shevchenko. In the vicinity of this Vuhledar, Ukrainian forces fought a heavy battle with the Russian troops and forced them to retreat. In order to identify weak points in the Ukrainian defense, Russian forces deployed subversive and reconnaissance groups in the areas of the settlements of Vremivka, Novosilki and Neskuchna. Ukrainian soldiers successfully discovered them - the enemy retreated with heavy losses.[22]

On June 28, Russian artillery shelled the areas of the settlements of Vuhledar, Shevchenko, Vremivka, Zeleno Pole, Poltavka, Girke, Zalizuk and Oreja.[23]
