From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bay Area Tutoring Association (BATA) is a nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation within the meaning of Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3). The current address is: 510 Valley Way, Milpitas, CA 95035. The phone number is - (408) 945-8003. Tax ID - 32-0411828.

BATA is a tutoring organization supporting the San Francisco Bay Area community. They train tutors and connect them with students and parents to provide tutoring services in small groups and one-on-one.[1]

Their tutors are diverse in all ways. They are "college students, recent graduates, professors, teachers, corporate professionals, and retirees across various industries".[2] Many of their tutors speak native languages other than English, so they can communicate with all students effectively. Languages include Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and others.[1]

Services[edit]

Bay Area Tutoring Association collaborates with community-based organizations, for-profit organizations, school districts, libraries, and city governments to provide tutoring and related services to support education[3] They provide services both in-person and online.

This means they are not always providing their own programs. They are often the service provider of a partner's program, such as homework help through the library[4][5] and helping foster kids through organizations like Pivotal[6] and Macaroni Kid[7].

More recently, they provided tutors for the Covid-19 Black Lives Matter Learning Pods Project, which was sponsored by HP, amazon, and KLA.

In 2020, BATA began receiving an unprecedented number of calls for help[8] during COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, they received a lot of calls from volunteers looking to help.

During the 2023-24 school year, BATA is providing trained tutors for two hours each day at five library locations in the Richmond Public Library system.[9]

BATA also trains and provides services to tutors, so they are well-trained and well-qualified to help students.[2]

  • They provide training and certification of tutors.
  • They train tutors in other organizations.[10]
  • Most of their tutoring workforce is volunteer which creates volunteer opportunities.[11][12]

They partner with Skool Mentor to provide college admissions advice and mentoring of high-school students.[13][14]

History[edit]

BATA was incorporated on May 3, 2013 in the State of California by Chris Norwood. It's stated purpose was to "train and provide tutors for low-income students."[15]

- Bay Area Tutoring Association named Nonprofit Of the Year[16] for 2017 by The Silicon Valley Organization.

- Restated Articles of Incorporation[15] filed January 11, 2018 show a modified purpose:

"...to train and provide tutoring for low income students, immigrants, English Language Learners, Foster Youth and others for the advancement of their education."

Funding[edit]

Funding is provided through private donations, business donations, program fees, as well as public and private grants.[17]

Grant received from the Santa Clara County District Attorney in June 2023. The funds were received as an organization that fights racial inequity.[18]

For the 2023-24 school year, BATA received a $250,000 Promise Grant from Accelerate.[19] Funds were given to Bay Area Tutoring Association, because they have an established model with evidence of scalability and positive student outcomes.
