ECTA (European Chemical Transport Association) is a non-profit association with its headquarter in Belgium focused on Chemical Transport and Logistics. The association counts more than 100 European members of the chemical logistics industry. More than 50 of the Members are Responsible Care (RC) Members, which means they are committed the Responsible Care Statutes to improve the industry in Sustainability, Health, Safety and Quality.

It is written in ECTA's mission that it wants to set standards for safety, security, efficiency, environmental and social impacts of the europe wide logistics and transport chemical goods.[1]

ECTA was first founded by Europe's chemical hauliers in October 1997. It was founed as the European Chemical Road Transport Association (ECRTA). The aim for ECRTA was to create a platform for representing the industry players interests in discussions with chemical producer associations and international regulatory bodies. Since the founding, the name of the association has been changed to European Chemical Transport Association (ECTA). The name was changed to include all modes of transportation (including inland waterways and rail transport) within Europe.

One of ECTA's workflows is to develope Best Practices in the logistics and transport of chemical goods in Europe in cooperation with its members and Experts. Another subject of ECTA is to give its voice for the chemical transport industry at European level.

History[edit]

1997[edit]

In October 1997, the European Chemical Road Transport Association (ECRTA) was formed by Europe's chemical hauliers during the 24th Logistics Meeting in Barcelona. The motive was to provide a stage for representing interests of the chemical logistics players in discussions with chemical producer associations and international regulatory bodies. In addition to road transport, it was included that ECRTA would speak as well for the intermodal transport of chemical goods. For that reason, the name has been changed to European Chemical Transport Association (ECTA).

1999[edit]

On 11 February 1999 ECTA has been granted by Royal Decree as an international non-profit organization in line with the Belgian law.

ECTA started to form working groups and many of them with chemical producers. The focus of these working groups is to publish best practices for standardization, leading to improvement in health, security, safety, environmental protection and productivity improvement.

2009[edit]

During the ECTA annual conference in Barcelona on 13 Februaury 2009, ECTA launched its Responsible Care (RC) Program for the European chemical land transport sector. A partnership agreement with the European Chemical Industry Council, CEFIC, was signed. ECTA was the first association to start a European wide Responsible Care program in the logistics industry. Committing as an company to the ECTA Responsbile Care program means to implement ECTA’s Responsible Care principles to the company's management system, strategy and daily workflows.

Today[edit]

Today ECTA provides its voice for the chemical logistics industry and its members. Several working groups were formed with Members and Experts to publish Best Practice Guidelines, Working Documents and Statistics. Joint studies are published in cooperation with other associations, insutitutions and authorities within Europe at a regional, national or international level.

Structure[edit]

ECTA is made up of an Executive Committee with a President, Vice-Presidents and Treasurer. Next to this, there are Board members set up of members. The Executive Committee and the Board members are volunteers from European (chemical) Logistics and Transport Companies. ECTA retains a small Team of professionals for the daily workflow of the Association and the coordination of ECTA´s topics and projects.[2]

The Executive Committee and the Board is elected for a period of three years by ECTA members at the annual Ordinary General Meeting (OGM).

The role of the committees is to take decisions on behalf of ECTA and ensure compliance with the organization's statutes.

Objectives[edit]

The objectives of the Association are intellectual activities as researches and studies to define solutions for the chemical logistics industry. To this effect, ECTA organizes the Responsible Care (RC) program, in accordance with the agreement signed with CEFIC in Manchester on 23 October 2008.

The objectives are realized by publishing Best Practices in logistics of chemical goods, studying the regulatory, scientific, economic, social and technical improvements in the industry.

Funding[edit]

ECTA as a non-profit association is financed largely by membership fees and ECTA Events.
