Bella Kaufman (September 11, 1956 - May 13, 2021) was an Israeli oncologist and cancer researcher, the director of the Institute of Breast Oncology, and the head of the Oncology Department at the Sheba Medical Center. She was also a professor at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and served as the president of the Israeli Society of Clinical Oncology and Radiation Therapy. She was the founder of the "Physicians for Human Rights" association.

Biography[edit]

She was born and raised in Jerusalem. In her youth, she attended the Hebrew University Secondary School and graduated in 1974. She was married to Yossi, a computer science lecturer, and they had a son and a daughter. They lived in Kiryat Ono.

In 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she recovered after treatment. However, the cancer recurred in 2012.

On May 13, 2021, she passed away from the illness and was buried in the Tel Mond cemetery.

Career[edit]

In 1977, she began her medical studies at the Hebrew University School of Medicine in Jerusalem, and in 1984, she earned her medical degree. From 1985 to 1990, she specialized in oncology and radiotherapy at the Hadassah Medical Center. In 2001, she joined the staff of the Sheba Medical Center.

She focused her research on hereditary breast cancer and led a study in 2018 that led to the first drug for carriers of the BRCA gene. Kaufman treated hundreds of breast cancer patients, published numerous studies in the field, and was considered one of the most compassionate and empathetic physicians in Israel. Thanks to her, research continued on the drug "Lynparza," which saved the lives of thousands of women worldwide.

From 2008 until her passing, she was a member of the research committee of the Israel Cancer Association and a member of the international forum of physicians specializing in hereditary breast cancer. She served as the president of the "Physicians for Human Rights" association.

  • 2018: Included in Forbes Israel's PowerWomen list.
  • 2020: Basser Global Prize.
