Beltrami Electric Cooperative
Beltrami Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative located in Bemidji, Minn. Established in 1940, Beltrami Electric provides power to almost 17,000 member-owners and over 20,000 meters. The Cooperative's service area spans more than 3,000 square miles in north-central Minnesota, including Beltrami County and parts of Clearwater, Cass, Hubbard, Itasca and Koochiching counties. The service area is divided into nine districts, each represented by a director elected to the cooperative's board of directors.[citation needed]
A finding by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission indicated that Beltrami Electric discriminated against residents of mobile homes on Red Lake by charging them higher connection fees than they charged for conventional homes. The Minnesota Supreme Court upheld the finding in a 1982 case.[1] In 2002, following complaints from residents of the Red Lake Indian Reservation over service disconnections and violations of Minnesota's cold weather rule, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission ordered an investigation into the complaints.[2]
