Ben Weiss

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ben Weiss is an American entrepreneur.[1] and the founder of Crook & Marker[2], an alcoholic beverage brand. Weiss previously founded Bai Brands, an antioxidant beverage maker that he sold to Dr Pepper Snapple Group for $1.7[3] billion in 2017[4].

Crook & Marker

In 2018, Weiss founded Crook & Marker, which makes organic alcoholic beverages with zero sugar[5]. The brand launched with a line of fruit-flavored spiked and sparkling drinks[6] and introduced a line of spiked sodas in October 2019[7]. Crook & Marker beverages are sold across the United States through retailers including Target, Kroger, Whole Foods Market, Giant Eagle and Harris Teeter, among others[8]

Crook & Marker beverages are considered part of the “better for you” category of alcoholic beverages[9], which includes hard seltzer and other beverages that are lower in sugar, calories and carbohydrates than beer or cocktails.[10]

Alongside Weiss, Crook & Marker’s leadership team includes company president Ken Kurtz, a former executive of Bai, Fiji Water, Boston Beer Company and E & J Gallo Winery[11]; and chief sales officer Ray Faust, former sales chief of Heineken USA[12].

Bai

Weiss founded Bai in 2009 in Princeton, New Jersey, after years of working in the coffee and beverage industries. His previous ventures included creating the Chocolixir beverage line for Godiva Chocolatier.[13]

Weiss started Bai after he learned about the coffeefruit – the fruit that surrounds the outside of the coffee bean — and decided to use it to create a new brand of beverages.[14] Bai started with Weiss and his father as the company’s sales team[15] and grew quickly into a national brand. Bai, which means “pure” in Mandarin, produces “antioxidant infusion” beverages with five calories and no artificial sweeteners, including fruit-flavored enhanced waters, Bai Bubbles carbonated beverages, Cocofusions and Superteas.[16]

By 2015, Bai was named one of “America’s Most Promising Companies” by Forbes[17]. In 2016, entertainer Justin Timberlake invested in Bai and became the brand’s “chief flavor officer.”[18] Timberlake starred with actor Christopher Walken in Bai’s national Super Bowl commercial in 2017.[19]

In November 2016, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, which had been Bai’s main distributor, announced it would acquire the brand for $1.7 billion[20]. Weiss departed Bai in 2017 after the acquisition.[21]
