Married musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z own a house located in Malibu, California designed by the architect Tadao Ando.

History[edit]

The property was sold for $14.5 million to the art collectors Maria and Bill Bell, Jr. in 2003 who commissioned the modernist architect Tadao Ando to build the new house[1] which took fifteen years to complete.[2] Bill inherited a soap opera fortune with his father having created shows such as The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.[3] Of the house Maria said “Certainly we asked ourselves, would we really be capable of going there and living in an Ando home?” because of the lengthy construction time and because “it’s also a daunting idea to live in something that can seem to many people like a Brutalist structure.”[4]

The house was sold in May 2023 to Beyoncé and Jay-Z for $200 million, establishing a new record for the most expensive residence sold in California.[5][6] The previous record had been established by the house next door which was bought by businessman Marc Andreessen for $177 million in 2021.[1] The deal was done off-market with the owners reportedly floating an asking price of $295 million.[2] The house was the most expensive single family home sold in the United States in 2023.[7]

House[edit]

The 40,000 sq ft house is located on a 6-acre plot on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California.[1] 7,645 cubic yards of concrete were used in the construction of the house.[8] It was built by Peter McCoy.[9]

The house is L-shaped and was described by Jack Flemming of The Los Angeles Times as having "vast, open spaces marked by concrete hallways and floor-to-ceiling walls of glass".[8] The house has a large swimming pool and cabana with lawns extending over its site on a cliff top overlooking the Pacific Ocean.[8]

The New York Post has described the house as “an empty Costco distribution center.”[10]
