Lee Whelan (born May 21st, 1990), better known as Biinny online, is a British speedrunner, professional gamer, and Twitch streamer. He is best known for his Super Mario 64 speedrun records, as well as live appearances at Games Done Quick, DreamHack and Stunfest.

Career

Biinny began his speedrunning career in 2012.[1] Getting started, he was inspired by Siglemic, who was live streaming to huge audiences on Twitch at the time. So he set his sights on the 70-star record for Super Mario 64 which was held by Siglemic and was 49:09 (49 minutes and 9 seconds) at that time.[2][3]

Speedrunning and Esports

In 2015, Whelan participated in his first live event, DreamHack Winter.[4] The event took place in Jönköping, Sweden and was hosted by European Speedrunner Assembly, where he was pitted against another UK speedrunner, Fuzzyness. He went on to win with a time of 52:07 for the 70-star event.[5][6]

Earlier in 2016, he managed to beat this record with a time of 48:57. Through the end of 2016, Biinny was among the top 10 speedrunners who had been able to break records below the 49-minute mark per Speedrun.com's historical database.[7][8]

A few years later in 2018, Biinny achieved his all-time best 70-star time rank for Super Mario 64 and placed 3rd in the world with a time of 48:04.[9]

The following year in March 2019, Lee attended Calithon, another charity speedrunning event for SM64.[10] He finished with a time of 49:13 for the 70-star challenge.[11][12]

Then, in 2019, Biinny once again achieved another barrier-breaking time going below the 48-minute mark with a time of 47:43. Although the sub-48-minute barrier was first broken by Cheese in 2016[13][14], this placed Biinny among the top 5 to hold this achievement at this time.[15]

As of 2021, Biinny was signed as a player for the professional esports organization Myztro Gaming.[16] Up through this period of time he is credited as a top 8 Super Mario 64 speedrunner for having completed all 70 stars in a time of 47:27.[17] Dom Sacco who writes for Esports News UK notes him as the number one UK 70-star speedrunner for Super Mario 64.[18]
