Billy Hui BEM is a British radio presenter, musician and choir conductor from Liverpool England.[1][2] He is well known for presenting BBC Radio Merseyside's weekly Chinese programme called 'Orient Express' since the 1980s.[3]
Life[edit]
Hui was raised and lives in Liverpool, England, he has one son.[4]
Career[edit]
Hui began his broadcasting career on community radio, presenting on various radio stations. He is mostly known for his work at BBC Radio Merseyside, presenting Orient Express alongside June Yee. He also regularly presents a Sunday afternoon show on the station, which, as of November 2023, also broadcasts to the North West BBC network of BBC Radio Cumbria, BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio Lancashire.[5] [6]
Alongside his radio work, Hui is the founder and choir director of Liverpool based choir SingMeMerseyside, in which he leads choir members at performances across Liverpool and abroad. The choir raises hundreds of thousands of pounds per year for charity. He has appeared on BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain when promoting the choir.[7]
In 2014, Hui took part in a special broadcast for the BBC based on the Chinese Community, at Liverpool's History Museum.[8]
Awards[edit]
Hui was awarded a British Empire Medal by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the 2021 New Year Honours list for his services to the local community of Liverpool with his achievements of raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities with choir SingMeMerseyside. Because of this, he also attended King Charles' Coronation in 2023.[9]
