Bishop Walsh Primary School is a primary school in Hong Kong founded by Father John Cioppa, MM. It was named after Bishop James Edward Walsh who was imprisoned by the Communist China at that time in Shanghai. Bishop Walsh was the last Western missionary to be released by Communist China when he was released into Hong Kong on 10 July 1970.
History[edit]
The School was founded in 1963 by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Hong Kong. Father John McLoughlin succeeded Fr Cioppa in 1965 as the second Supervisor of the School until his death in 1980.
In 1975, Bishop Walsh Primary School was handed over by the Maryknoll to the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and is now run by the latter.[1] In 2009, pm section of the School became a full day school and in 2010 moved to a new campus in Kowloon Tong and renamed as Kowloon Tong Bishop Walsh Catholic Primary School.[2]
