Bob Willard (author)
Robert G. "Bob" Willard (born October 14, 1943, in Sherbrooke, Quebec) is an author, speaker, and researcher on sustainable business. He applies leadership practices to sustainability issues[citation needed] and has delivered over 1,100 talks since 2002[citation needed]. He is widely considered[peacock prose] as a guru on how to develop, calibrate, and communicate the business case for corporate sustainability initiatives.
Willard is the founder of Sustainability Advantage,[1][non-primary source needed] a B Corporation[2][user-generated source?] that produces resources like talks, books, DVDs, business case simulators, and slide decks. Willard has been interviewed by many journalists writing articles on sustainability issues, and contributes articles to Sustainable Brands,[3][non-primary source needed] the Great Transition,[4][non-primary source needed] and GreenBiz.[5][non-primary source needed]
In 2011, Willard was named by the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) to their inaugural Sustainability Hall of Fame,[6][non-primary source needed][importance?] acknowledging "those people that have contributed the most to the emerging field of sustainability".
Early life
Willard was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and is the 12th generation of descendants of Major Simon Willard, who arrived in Boston in 1634 from Horsmonden, Kent (England) and was among the founders of Concord, Massachusetts[importance?]. Bob Willard grew up in Ville Saint-Laurent, Quebec. He graduated from McGill University in 1964, obtained a teaching certificate from Bishop’s University in 1965, and taught high school mathematics and science in Montreal for two years[citation needed].
Career
Bob Willard worked for IBM Canada for nearly 4 decades in various management-level positions.[7] He received his master's degree from the University of Toronto in 2000 and retired from IBM the same year in order to convert his Masters comprehensive paper into a book. He founded Sustainability Advantage and began to deliver presentations to help companies see how paying more attention to environmental and social aspects of their value chain would make them more successful. Then he packaged and sold his resources. He does not do consulting but does 80–100 presentations a year to spread the word that companies can do better by reducing their negative environmental and societal impacts[citation needed].
