Bollywood Duets

Duets are sung by generally one (or multiple) male and one (or multiple) female singer(s) simultaneously. Duets are very much in vogue in Indian music, especially in Bollywood. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle has sung hundreds of duets with their generation male singers Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar, which were picturised on the hero and the heroine of perspective films.

1950s[edit]

In the 1950s, the unforgettable pair of Raj Kapoor and Nargis Dutt saw some of the best duets in Bollywood history. Some of their top musical hit duet songs are “Meri Aankhon Mein” (sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi) from Barsaat, “Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua” (sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey) from Shree 420, “Dam bhar jo udhar munh phere” (sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh) from Awaara.[1]

1970s[edit]

1970s saw the resurgence of duet songs in Bollywood through the hit pair of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. Some of their evergreen numbers are “Yeh kaha aagaye hum” (Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar) from Silsila, “Mein teri hogayi” from Khoon Pasinaa, “Pardesiya yeh sach yeh piya” (Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar) from Mr. Natwarlal.[1] Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle sang their maximum duets with RD Burman. And both of them shared a deep personal bonding with the flamboyant music director. They were the most successful singing pair in those days who crooned "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana", "Bhali Bhali Si Ek Soorat", "O Saathi Re", "Lekar Hum Deewana Dil", "Pyaar Ka Jadoo", "Jaanejaan Dhoondhta Phir Raha" etc. chartbasters.[2]

1980s[edit]

1980s saw some very popular Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle duets like "Yeh Vaada Raha", "Ek Hasina Thi", "Aa dekhe Zara", "Inteha Ho Gayi", "Mausam Pyar Ka" etc. Asha Bhosle's duets include "Pal Do Pal Ka" (with Rafi), "Aur Is Dil Mein", Aur Kya Ehde Wafa", "Tumse Milke Aisa Laga" and "Pyaar Ke Mod Par" (all with Suresh Wadkar). Lata Mangeshkar sang some very hit duets with S. P. Balu like "Tere Mere Beech Mein", "Kabootar Jaa", "Dil Deewana" etc. Her duets with Kishore includes "Nainon Mein Sapna", "Janae Kaise Kab Kahan", "Saagar Kinare" and Amit Kumar songs are "Yaad Aa Raha Hai".

Mohammed Rafi–Lata Mangeshkar[edit]

Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar are widely considered as the greatest duo of Bollywood music. They've crooned all time hits like "Barsaat Mein Hum Tum", "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj" "Tasveer Teri Dil Mein", "Tumhi Meri Mandir", "Dafli Waala", "Chadhti Jawaani", "Kabhi Raat Din", "Chalo Sajna", "Chahunga Tujhe", "Bagon Mein Bahar Hai", "Dekho Rootha Na Karo" etc.

Female Duets[edit]

Female duets are also very popular and part of Bollywood lore. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, two real life sisters, have sung 86 duets together. Most of them are very popular. These songs include "Humre Gaon Koi Aayega", "Jab Jab Tumhe Bulaya", Manbhavan Ke Ghar Jaayega" etc. Their collaboration with other singers Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum also very popular. In the 1990s, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Alka Yagnik's female duets were smashing hits. Anuradha Paudwal had a similar success with each of them.[3]
